Flogging a car
Discussion
I'm looking to go travelling in September so will be selling my car. First time I've ever sold a car so I've got a few questions.
Do all dealerships pay cash for cars? Or do some only accept cars as a trade in against one of theirs?
What is the best way of selling the car in terms of achieving the best price?
Anyone had much success using ebay or is pistonheads classifieds just as/more effective?

Just sold my 350z and far and away the best results
came from eBay classified once you filter out the Nigerian fraudsters. Pistonheads achieved a grand total of zero enquiries but cost me nothing, autotrader generated a handful but cost over £40 where as eBay classified ad generated a lot of interest and only cost around £15.
You'll spot the fraudsters a mile off as they'll always be abroad and they'll always want to pay you the asking price or more by paypal

I agree - Ebay classifieds would be the way I'd go too. £15 is a bargain for the exposure you get.

Yes here's a thought. Go and take a look at http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
The summary of my exeprience selling a car on EBay is...
1st winning bidder: didn't make contact. I closed the case
2nd winning bidder: Wasted vast amounts of time and didn't buy. I closed the case
3rd winning bidder: didn't contact me, offered me a trade in. I closed the case
4th winning bidder: came, saw and collcetd at the agreed price.
'Winning bidders' are nothing of the sort and EBay's legal notice (when you bid) is worth nothing. I've lost my 100% status because of bidder 2. Ebay owes me three listing fees which i haven't yet received. And they won't take off the foul feedback of a timewaster/liar who's doing the same to other sellers.
My advice is, as in the post, go classified if you use EBay. You don't bid to win on a car and then decide you may want it, or you may even come to see it and then possibly buy it.
Be warned, EBay protect buyers, getting fair treatment as a seller is practically impossible.

I have sold 4 or 5 cars on Ebay. No problems so far. You take good clear pictures of every side, the interior and engine bay. Give a long detailed write up and be honest about any faults, flaws or damage. If it is not too shabby or over priced you should get plenty of interest. Think of the typical kind of person who would most likely want your type/style of car, cater to their tastes if possible.
Start the bidding at you absolute lowest price, do not waste time with reserve prices, you just get lots of £1, £100, £105 bids, and lots of emails asking what the reserve is. Pointless. Also try to end the bidding on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night. 7-8 perhaps?
Good luck.
