I was really sad to see him in a wheelchair getting his OBE. I am old enough to remember him as England number 8 and he has to be one of the all round best athletes England has ever produced. I remember he won the European superstars comp {beating League winger Kieth Fielding over 100 metres}, he made the AAA final at 400 metre hurdles, was English schools canoeing champion, played first class rugby until 41, then started setting all sorts of age group world records on a rowing machine in his 40s before almost getting in the boat race crew at 50 while doing a post grad degree. He is also very clever and had a succesful business career, I met him once and he could not have been friendlier and more charming.
To see this handsome, giant, intelectual looking so frail really brought home what a lottery life can be. It's ironic that the only other rugby player I know as universally loved as Andy was Gordon Brown {not him!} the old Scotland and Lions lock who also died reletavely young with cancer.
