idea?: taking a route slightly 'off forum' and meeting up with the London/Guildford mob 1/2 way down the A3/somewhere. Just to figure out rendezvous time and work it back for beach-side meet time smile

Possibly. Im doing Field Gun Tournament this year again on the 5th so i might be able to squeeze it in. I know my mate in the Mk1 Focus RS wants a run out. It'll depend on how baggy my head is. So 90% Yes!

Have you ever watched the Royal Tournament, where 2 teams of Sailors / Marines pull a 2 tonne cannon and trailer (box) around an assault course, stripping it down and carrying it over walls and chasms? Thats field gun. Ive done it every year for the past 9. Great sport and excellent physical excercise. The one on June 5th is 'Brickwoods' which is the same thing, minus the obsticles. Just a straight race around a track firing at marked points, stripping and wheel changing at others. Proper lung buster.

Sounds excellent. I know of the royal tournement thing, but how did you get into this? I thought it was forces only.

That makes sense - I didn't think civies could get in! A good mate's son was in the marines. He loved it, best thing that happened to him. Sadly he's no longer with us.

I remember well. I never knew him personally but had seen him around. My mate Damien Mulvihill was killed only afew weeks before, hits hard. At his funeral i saw another guy from the same company as John and Damien, a very good friend of mine actually. Mark Ormrod is his name, lost both les and one arm (been on TV loads over the past year or so). Really brings it home, and the fealing of guilt having left still sicken me to this day.

I've seen Mark on TV. Awesome the way the guys like that keep on. Humbling. Makes you so f**king mad when you hear some whingers going on...

No point in feeling guilty though; neither JT nor your mate would expect that of you. If your time's up it's up.

You must know Pete and Lin, and Ian then? I was drinking with Pete last week. I don't think they'll ever get over the loss of JT, although Pete seems a bit more even keel now. But with Ian just gone off to Sandhurst and planning to get out to Afghanistan ASAP..... Jesus, they will have a lot to cope with.

I've got two trimmed and weak knees and a hip on its way out but I've signed up for the New Forest Marathon in September and I'm going to split any money I make between Help for Heroes and the Thornton's Charity - John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation.

So, rekindling this thread on a lighter note.........

Anyone elso heading up? Looks like we'll have to try to get there early. Ive just checked the other threads and it looks pretty busy, very early on. Fancy beating the traffic and pipping them to the best parking spots?

I'm a Goodwood virgin so happy to take direction on this; what time would you suggest heading off? Do we expect to hang for a few hours after brekkers? Is it worth doing the posh-poseur thing of slotting a bottle of bubbly in the glove box (which strangely turns into a 'fridge in my car when the air-con is switched on) for some cultured quaffing?

Good question. Ive only been to the Roys Rolls meetings there. Anyone else got a clue?
