Hi

I was thinking of getting my car on a dyno, to check what bhp I'm getting and get some figures...

I was wondering if there are any risks when taking my car on a dyno? Any potential damages or risks?

And also, I'm quite fussy and don't like people touching/ messing about with the engine. Do they have to plug anything in the engine or have a play with the standard maps/ ecu?

Cheers.

There is always a risk when you repeatedly take an engine to it's maximum revs, even with a rev limiter. They won't adjust or tweak anything unless you ask them to. They will need a connection to take off engine revs (will depend on the engine).

There is always a risk.....just because many places have a dyno, doesnt mean they have a clue what to do with it !!

Also factor in that the numbers are mostly for pub talk on such occasions. Hence just call them Pub HP

If you get a high number you'll be happy...if you get a low number either you'll think there is something wrong...they will tell you there is something wrong in order that they repair it...or indeed something might be wrong.

Of course...could get a high number too and something be wrong.

It's a minefield !!

Vixpy has a dyno (Surrey Rolling Road) - maybe PM him?

Every time you start your car, there is a small risk it may fail.
On a rolling road session just to get some power figures, there will be about three short runs (say a minute or two each) with the engine on full load, and peaking at maximum revs. While they do put a fan in front, there is not the same natural cooling as you would get going down the motor way. If the engine is weak, this may be the last straw.

Dont let that put you off, unless you have reason to think that the engine is weak its probably OK.

The rolling road operator should not adjust or change anything without your say so. If you just ask for a power figure, thats what you will get. If you ask him to start tuning, then he may start adjusting. I would also recommend Surrey Rolling Road, not only because its the correct part of the country, but because the guy who runs it really knows his stuff. Seach for VIXPY
