I am considering a new toy, a convertible would be nice MX5 or similar but my garage is used by the hillclimb car so it would have to live on the driveway.

This of course leaves it open to the elements, I live in Scotland, on the coast so wind/rain/snow/seagulls all have to be contended with, plus the fact that I am only home every second month means the car will not be getting regular use.

Is this practical, do many of you do it, would a car top cover be worthwhile (I don't like full covers as I think they just trap moisture).

Suggestions for a cheap, under 5K, convertible wouldn't go amiss either.

I've had MX5s live outside with no leaks or problems, though getting more regular use than yours would. You could always put a hardtop on it for winter if you were worried.

An early Merc SLK? Convertible - but with the hard folding roof so weather not an issue at all.

Decent call, I will check if that is in my price range, the looks are a bit of an issue though and I do quite fancy an MX5 as I think it could be fun on autotests.

The 5 will be a more involving drive. My suggestion was based on roof-off experience and practicality...
