Well we've heard all the stories but never really believed them. Well its true. I now have a bare metal patch on my wife's beloved 330i touring soI guess a full respray of the bonnet is called for. Called the insurers and its not covered so keen to see if anyone can recommend a decent body shop where I can get a courtesy car. Hertforshire area would be ideal

Also, as i was planning to sell the car to buy an X5 am I better of getting it fixed or should I try to sell with discount and allow new buyer to resolve at his expense?

Same thing happened to my 1 month old E46 330d coupe in Carbon Black Metallic. Some feathered fiend dropped a load on the roof and despite washing it off within a couple of hours (once I'd returned home from work) the paint was irreparably damaged mad

If I were you I'd get the paintwork sorted before selling the car then it is one less thing the potential new buyer has to worry about fixing / or will be put off by… Unless of course it is going into a main dealer in exchange since they'll shaft you on part-ex anyway!

I've seen it dimple the clearcoat which is pretty annoying.
It's mainly due to softer waterbased paints as the good stuff was banned as it killed a dolphin somewhere, allegedly.

I've been very disappointed with the quality of paint on my BMW. My Renault Clio survived a multi-month bird/fruit/sap bombardment in the (very, very hot) summer of 2006, and it looked fine once it was all washed off. And come winter, my trusty metal shovel -- none of that plastic crap, you just don't get the same lovely sharp edges -- was always stowed in the boot, ready to scrape away any snow that had accumulated on the bonnet or roof.

Fast forward a bit, and my BMW's bonnet got a blemish from being crapped on a bit for a couple of months when the weather wasn't even all that awesome. And judging by the roof you'd think I drove the thing upside down, all after only one use of my favourite shovel. Others tell me my expectations are unreasonable, but when they've been formed by a car made in France of all places, I'm inclined to disagree...

True. I'm not trying to say that I should get a medal or anything, and I'm not looking for sympathy. I emphasised the fineness of those sharp edges quite specifically, so as to point out to the reader that, yes, I'm well aware that I'm some kind of retard, because it doesn't take a genius to work out that sharp edges are likely to scratch car paint.

That said, the Renault Clio's paint survived the attack (though perhaps this was due to a greater coating of ice, or maybe I was more gentle, I really don't know...), and it survived all that bird st (and tree sap, and fruit...) in far harsher conditions. The BMW's didn't. This is just to back up the general feeling that the BMW car paint ain't necessarily all that. I agree. (The metallicness was better on the Clio as well.)

Next time I'll just be, like, "+1".
