Hi fellow phers, I've just put a new v8 engine in my mgb and its got a different type of alternator to the last one.
These are the wires I've currently got, big brown, small brown, brown and yellow. The old alternator was the 3 pin plug type (just i didnt use the plug lol)

And this is the new alternator that i need to make these wires connect to

so the question is how do i do it please, abit of snipping is fine by me, thanks Eddy

or no-one feels confident enough to mess with the wires smile

are those the only connectors on the back of it? Is there another "male" lucar visible on the rear panel

The Charging connector ought to have an identifying mark by the side of it

maybe B+ or + alone, but during the changeover period it wasnt always obvious which were which. On your alt that is the 6mm connector with a 10mm metric nut and washer

The thin br/ye wire needs to go to the IND terminal which may be the thinner threaded one or could be a lucar just visible through the casing & if it's the thinner thread it will prolly be a 8 or 9mm nut

Assuming this you could try this way of working

The brown wires can have Lucas Terminals CUB324 and CUB 224 fitted respectively these are 6mm clearance to fit the larger nut'n'bolt terminal on the back of he alternator Fit both brown wires to the charging point

(If you can get Lucas eyelet terminals great but anyway, the Halford sets are good enough for the job) one yellow one for the thick charging cable and one blue one for the thinner one, this is solely to get a good cable crimp on the insulator for each wire)

The other brown and yellow one supplies the warning light (IND) circuit and should be connected to the smaller diameter threaded connection with a 5mm eyelet CUB223

And just ' cos there was only me hang on a bit for corrobortion

I could do with another pic of the rear of the alt at a different angle just to be sure, but this is how I would do it for my Midget

A quick check would be to turn on the ignition (keeping the wires away from the body work) and touch the brown/yellow to the smaller threaded post with the ignition on and see whether the ignition light comes on in the speedo (assuming the B has its w/l in the speedo like the Midget)

Hope this helps

And look how I spelt suppressor!

I feel ashamed frown
