Found this thing in my sitting room on Saturday.
It looks pretty menacing. I've had a look on the internet and can't find anything similar.

I'm living in Ireland, and this doesn't look irish (no freckles or red hair)
Its about an inch and a half long and has a spike pointing down at the back.
I'd really appreciate any help in identifying it. I can get some better photos if needed.
  • Please excuse me if this is a common household bettle, but in my 29 years I have never seen one like this.

A 19th century recipe from France for cockchafer soup reads: "roast one pound of cockchafers without wings and legs in sizzling butter, then cook them in a chicken soup, add some veal liver and serve with chives on a toast.

You think the beetle is impressive? Wait till you see the grubs - European version of a witchety (?) grub and ugly mutha's they are too! I do like the idea of going out in the semi darkness with a tennis racket though, you can hear them coming easy.

When i were a lad there was a swarm like congregation of cockchafers appeared from nowhere down our street, had never seen them before. The street was buzzing with these little helicopter beetle things. My eldest cousin (always the bad boy) caught one and gave it to me, i was about 12 or something. Thought it would be a good idea to put one in a matchbox and take it home to show Mum & Dad, then let it out in my bedroom. fk me! I did not sleep well that night hehe

Funnily enough i haven't seen one for years since, until this weekend eek One buzzed into the bathroom and scared the st out of the girlfriend rofl I instantly knew what it was. Must be certain weather that brings them out smile
