M1 Gantry Cameras - Notts
Discussion
Drove up the M1 this morning and delighted to see the roadworks have finally gone and all 4 lanes open from J25-28.
However, I'm nervous about the new speed cameras on the gantries like those on the M25. Are these live or do they only operate when a temporary speed limit is in force?

What, all of that 20 odd mile stretch of 50mph is now back to 70(ish)? However, I'm nervous about the new speed cameras on the gantries like those on the M25. Are these live or do they only operate when a temporary speed limit is in force?
Yeah I know you won't look in the midlands forum but... Repost(ish)
Great news if they have finally lifted the 50 limit, the most dangerous thing going as I inevitably drive that stretch early morning or late evening and it has to have been the most comatose inducing speed possible at those times with little traffic and nothing happening to warrant the reduction.
I last used it two weeks ago when the hard shoulder was still coned off, with signs saying it was closed for communications testing. At that time there were no cameras on the gantries, but the locations for them were very visible. Have they been installed?

Yeah, but now they make up even stupider limits to try and catch motorists out and make more money. On Thursday night lane 1 and 2 had a 20mph light displayed and lane 3 was 40mph, because there was some workers on the slip road. It is getting pathetic now, and its actually dangerous.
Cars and lorries were having to brake sharply as were worried about getting a ticket.

Had the misfortune to do most of that stretch today - I'm not sure there actually are any cameras on the gantries at the moment. However, I'm nervous about the new speed cameras on the gantries like those on the M25. Are these live or do they only operate when a temporary speed limit is in force?
If there are and they are active when no temporary limit is displayed I'll be watching the letter box for a couple of weeks (it will make a nice addition to the one I'm expecting from the camera van on the A1 by Alconbury this morning).
The camera's have not as yet been installed so far as I can see having driven through this section yesterday.
Also, when the speed limit signs are displayed you will notice that the red circle around the limit is not displayed, this means that the limit is advisory only and not enforceable. It would still be possible however for a traffic officer to stop you for ignoring the sign if it could be demonstrated that you were driving dangerously / without due care and attention etc or perhaps breaking the National speed limit.

+1 there is nothing on those overhead gantries yet. The platforms for the traditional boxes to be installed are there but not boxes.
Do people not use their mirrors to check?

You must mean Police officer, as a HA Traffic Officer can't do as you say, HATO's do not have enforcement powers. Also, when the speed limit signs are displayed you will notice that the red circle around the limit is not displayed, this means that the limit is advisory only and not enforceable. Don't know if they're live but they're not on every gantry.
Went through there the other week and in daylight doing 80-90 leptons you can see through the bottom of the gantry and see which have them or not.
The ones without, you can see daylight through the gantry and can do so with enough time to coast down to pass the camera laden ones at acceptable speeds and then squeeze the leptoniser till the next one, never touched the brake once.

I drove up to Yorkshire and back on Friday. There are definitely cameras on some of the gantries, but there are signs on the southbound carriageway saying they are not in use (not on the northbound). Nobody was taking any notice. I suspect they will be used like the M25 ones, when the variable limits are in operation.

I hope they are sensible on the camera limits.
