I would suggest Rye (not exactly Dorset), lovely town, very picturesc. Camber sands is a nearby and is a great beach walk. A few nice restaurants thrown in.

Lymington in the New Forest?

Some nice roads through the forest, some coastal routes if you look hard enough, plenty of places to eat, Bournemouth just up the road if you get bored.

Goodwood would give you the south downs to hoon about

Chichester is a nice historic-y place and plenty of other things round and abouts. No idea what the beaches (if that matters) are like but know places like 'the Witterings' are popular....

As has already been suggested Dartmouth is a great place. We stayed there a couple of weeks ago in the Dart Marina. Get yourself a nice room with a view of the harbour, and sup beer watching the yachts and exotic cars (R8 V10, GT3RS, Bentley CGT whilst we were there) whilst your lady gets ready. Then, grab some food at the Wildfire Bistro, book an outside table if the weather is nice.

It will be worth the three hour trip, should be a nice drive too. Take the Torbay route and you can then use the chain ferry, which is fun.

John Burton-Race? http://www.thenewangel.co.uk/ we looked at his place for a recent trip west but ended up in Cornwall instead (definitely not within 3 hours of London!)

In laws live just outside Lyme Regis. It's a great spot, and fairly unspoilt.

I was the skipper of one of those yachts three weeks ago and may well have gone past you!

Really strange, we ate in both the fish and chip restaurant, and the Thai restaurant above it, and sat in the pub next door for the afternoon. Really strange to see it all go up in smoke. Very sad indeed, I hope they can salvage what's left.

Well recommend Dartmouth though, and also the New Forest (where I come from) is very different to London! Lyndhurst Modena Ferrari/Maserati (where my car comes from!) worth a peep, and loads of stuff to see and do in the area. Beaulieu motor museum is great too, send wifey to the Palace to look around while you check the cars. Lymington is great for relaxing and taking life pretty easy, and there's all the coast to see and do.

Isle of Wight is nice for a few days if the weather is good, we spend quite a bit of time there when we go boating. Osbourne House is spectacular. The castles are good fun too. Yarmouth has a couple of really good pub/restaurants, very easy going again, quite informal (you'll more than likely get chatting to a local or two within a few minutes).
