From my house to my car is 70 metres, is it possible to get a 240 volt extension this long? I have had a look but can only seem to find 50 metre ones. Or would it be possible to join a couple together??? wobble

Why don't you buy the cable and then attach the plug and socket?

I thought of that but 70 metres of cable is going to take some winding up without a reel and probably be a PITA for tangleing. I'm more concerned about voltage drop over that sort of distance and am wandering if thats why they are not available off the shelf. Another factor is cost. I can buy a 50m reel for circa 30 quid but a metre of suitable cable is approx £2 a metre.

I've made one up of around that length. No issues that I am aware of to date. I use a wall mounted hose reel thing and wind it up with that.

How much current are you looking to draw?

Enough for a vac/small jet wash/polisher. Not at the same time obviously.

Fair enough I give in to all the clever dicks.

I live in a small cottage. As the crow flies its approx 35 metres to my parking space. However between that and my house is a neighbours garden. I have the option of driving around to my front door but in doing so need to park hard up against a wall so another neighbour can access his driveway. This is not very practical hence the need for a long fk off extension lead to get power round to my large, four space parking area.

It really isn't too difficult to understand and is irrelevant to the original question.

Go to a wholesaler such as TLC, cable will be no where near £2 per metre. They will also give you an old cable drum for free to wind it up on.

100m of 1mm 3core cable is £34.00.

Just found this, maybe more suitable. Amazing what happens when you know where to look. http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/CA1dot5ART3Y....

Dear Jonny 693,

that 50m sounds suspiciously cheap, what's the cross sectional area (CSA)?

For that length I'd recommend 1.5 sq. mm - 100m from CPC.
As other posters have suggested a hose reel is an easy to wind storage method.
Fit an earth leakage breaker plug or socket.

Oh, and when you use it and especially if you've a heavy load unwind the cable fully - it'll get rather warm else!
For this reason I'd trim the length down to the maximum you're likely to use. There'll always be a use for the other 30m smile

I see you've found stuff already, and cheaper too, well done biggrin,

regards,
Jet

Any extension lead, for safety reasons, heating up and wire melting, should only be used when fully unwound, so bit of a pain when doing small nearby home, garden jobs to have to fully unwound lead, better for that reason to have two or more extension leads.

About seventy quid for an 850W petrol generator. Far less hassle than leads that long & gives you something suitably PH to play around with smile
