Hi all, im playing with teh idea of buying the above, but a few people have told me to stay away from those cars as they have issues, the only issues i am probably aware of are the gearbox (correct me if im wrong) is there anything else that i need to look out for?

Cheers

Like any 15 year old car that is popular with a certain crowd that like fast food and car parks, it could have been abused. You just need to be careful that it's been properly looked after, not skimped on, and not been subject to silly mods.

There is a GTI+R OC which is better bet for detailed buying advice.

As you said the gearbox is the weak point but if he hasn't been looked after then there can be a lot of nasty bills ahead.

Just have to go into it with your eyes open and be willing to walk away if you have doubts.

the first car i ever imported was a gtir, back in 1998 it was pretty easy to find a nice one as you could buy one that was only 3 or 4 years old, i beat the hell out of it and it never missed a beat....12 years on im not sure the same could be said, as with all old cars that attract the wrong kind of owner your chances of finding a nice one for sensible money is imo slim, my advice buy a mr2 turbo.
