GF's mk3 petrol polo.

Making a few odd noises that probaably need sorting - but i'm not entirely sure what might be causing them!

1: When setting off from a stand still, or when changing from first into second at slowish speed and lifting off the cluth the car makes a sort of "clunk" sound... no loss of power, clutch not slipping no other signs of anythign except for this clunk sound when you change gear and or come off the clutch completly. Doesn't occur in higher gears.

2: When turning left a starnge rumble / grating noise from the front right wheel.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

1) Clutch release bearing?

2) CV Joint in need of replacement?

Suspension mountings/wheel bearing/CV joint/drive shaft/engine mounting. Could be a couple of things combined...

Also, Sounds silly, but have you checked if the wheel hasn't come loose?

Sounds like CV joint or driveshaft, or perhaps even Diff

Sounds like an engine mounting. Put it on a hill, then try and pick away. If you get a mad clunking from a dancing gearbox with the extra torque, you know where to look.

Try jacking the noisy corner up, spin the wheel and then try to rock it to and fro.

If there is a slight graunching noise when it is spinning (doesn't have to be fast), or there is a bit of play when it is rocked, that would point to the wheel bearing.

Been into the local independant this morning to have a seal on the gearbox selecter replacing. Asked him to see if he could find the solution to the noise for us.....

He can't find anything wrong with bearings or anything like this the only thing that he can see is that on the drivers side the anti roll bar on the suspension is very very close to the wisbone.
It seems to be on full lock and at low speeds when you change gear the two rub agasint each other.

Which is odd as on the passeneger side he says its fine and quite a normal sized gap.

Thats what he asked.

Its only been doing it about three weeks, and as far as i'm aware she hasn't hit anything! The again some of the potholes round here are pretty big - but surely you'd have to hit somethign pretty hard to bend the anti roll bar?

He says both wishbones look pretty new, - we've only owned the car about 10 months.

Common problem with these and Skodas. The antiroll bar mounting is knackered, allowing the antiroll bar to move from side to side, hence the uneven gaps.
Get the garage to centralise it and put jubilee clips up against the mounts (inboard) to stop the 'float'.

You can rule out or identify if it's a CV joint. Just take it to the back of a large car park or turning area and put it on full lock on both sides. If there's a regular 'clunk clunk clunk clunk' noise coming from the bad wheel, it's a cv joint.

Bearing test involves jacking the car up and spinning the wheel, like already mentioned.

Might be bushes being worn out too. Never easy to tell - what we thought was a bearing going turned out to be crap tyres!
