Ok Guys

Firstly I would like to say hello as I have been hovering around this site for the last couple of years and have enjoyed reading the banter!! I am now in the position to buy a RHD 993 and have been to see one today for sale in a small dealership. It's a 95 (N plate) has a FPSH, 89,000 miles , 18 inch turbo alloys, no dings, dents etc, the dealer has also offered me 12 months warranty for the full asking price of £24,995.

This seems a fair price but what other questions should I be asking and should I still get an independent check?

Sorry if this sounds dumb but this is my first porker and years of waiting and saving so I dont want to get it wrong...

Cheers for any replies..

You won't go wrong with an independent inspection - you may be glad you did if it's a dog.

Ask him why it has non-standard wheels.

Eeek, no idea. Someone else may be able to help. I don't know much about Pompy apart from the dodgy clubs

Couple of easy things I would check if I had a test drive (these are really common to a lot of 993's) - with the car stationery, sit in the drivers seat with the door open, and depress the clutch a few times - if you get a 'squeak' at the bottom of its travel, this indicates possible problems with the slave cylinder. Similarly whilst driving, check to see the clutch pedal returns fully to the top of its range of motion. If it stops about an inch or so short, and has to be 'lifted' with your foot, you have a problem with the clutch kinematic - there was a lot of talk originally on Rennlist of this being down to defective slave cylinders, but it turns out that Porsche actually released a revised pedal components that changed the kinematic action, and cured the problem for good. Usually the problem returned a few thousand miles after changing slave cylinders if the pedal design was not updated.

Cruise slowly in first gear, come to a halt, and check that the car comes OUT of 1st gear smoothly - if it is notchy or feels like its sticking (ie you have to pull it out of gear), you have corrosion on the input shaft due to a previous clutch job not being completed correctly (the correct grease not applied after the clutch was replaced). This is expensive to fix, and again seems to be quite common with 993's.

I owuld alsi check that the car has had the wiring loom replaced, or been inspected and cleared by a OPC - there was an official recall about 1 year ago for the early cars to do with Porsche using poor insulation on the engine wiring loom, this would go brittle and expose the bare wires - the effects are far ranging from poor running, starter motors staying on all the time, to the car catching fire!! (I don't believe a 993 ever caught fire due to this, although it is a possibilty!). I certainly knew a few owners that had problems resulting from the dodgy loom though.

Standard shocks are thought to go 'past there best' at about 30k miles - so you might want to look at replacing shocks / springs with some Bilsteins or the like - there are loads of great options for this, and a great amount of discussion on the topic of suspensions can be found on Rennlist.

Infact, all you wanted to know about a 993 summarised here:

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?&threadid=11444

Oh, also aircon - if it doesnt work, it might be more than just a regass - corroded condenser is a possibility, so not cheap to fix.

Other than that they are truly built like bank vaults, and should be problems free if it has been looked after all its life!

Regards

Without a doubt get it checked by an 3rd party, an OPC, or a good indepedent. I put a deposit on one, subject to an inspection. Inspection results which the dealer didn;t argue with would have meant £4-5k spent getting it right, got my deposit back, did the same thing with another dealer, this time the car came up clean and sorted. result, never had a prob (apart from shoddy tossers at an OPC not far of the M25 (North), anyway i bought the car, never looked back. The best money spent was without a doubt the inspections on the cars. Your heart has brought you here, now let your head do the bidding. good luck. they are great cars!
