Since fitting a new backbox to the Beemer, it has developed a rattle/vibration at 2500rpm. Sounds fine the rest of the time but as the engine revs past 2500rpm it makes a loud vibrating rattle.

I had a play around under the car the other day but couldn't find anything obvious. It only makes the sound when the engine is under load. It doesn't make it when reving so I can't get someone to rev it and have a listen.

Whats the best way to go about sourcing said rattle? How would a garage go about it? It's really starting to get on my tits.

Do you not have any friends?
A garage would have it up on ramps with somebody inside to rev it whilst a mechanic listens from under the car.

And them based on your relationship with the garage, they would fit a new exhaust and if it is a garage begining with k and ending with t with a wickfi inbetween. Then they would fit new pads, shocks, tyres, dampers and the rest.

Did you not read the original post? It doesn't rattle when reving at standstill. Only when the car is moving. Bit hard to simulate that when someone is lying underneath it ...

My original thought was the heat shields but I've removed them and it's still there.

It does it under load as the engine is twisting in it's mounts causing the exhaust to move and hence rattle on something. Check for areas where the exhaust us very close to other parts and try and adjust it to increase these clearances. Should end up stopping the rattle.

You also might want to check the engine mounts as if they're worn, the engine will move excessivley under load causing the same problem on an otherwise ok exhaust.

Cheers. It is quite close to the rear crossmember but I wouldn't have thought it were close enough to knock. It's a very tinny rattle rather than a a knocking. Much more like its a loose shield.

I'll try adjusting the mounts to get it hanging a little lower to avoid the crossmember more.
