Just wondering as still looking at how to make a nice 'sleeper' and these engines seem quite the tunable item. Also i realise tuning is never going to be cheap but don't want to go mental would like as much bang for my buck as possible. and yes i am a pikey. cheers.

Leons and Ibizias with IHI conversion have seen well over 350bhp. Not cheap though. My BAM engine Cupra R was about 265bhp with a remap, CAI and a few other bits.

IHI is a turbo conversion - places like Jabba do them.

Probably the Octavia vRS but you are getting it in 180bhp format as per the Leon Cupra. The later mk1 Leon Cupra R225 is a better starting point as it has 222bhp and a few mods over the 210 version. I had one from new for 4 years and it was great - now get one for around £5k.

There is quite a few now such as Paul Jordan's MK1 Scirocco making over 600bhp.

I dont know the full spec or the drivetrain spec but Paul and also Andy Waite run huge power and run the cars very regularly.

There is a UK car that has just hit over 750bhp on a dyno, it is down tuned to 591bhp for the road, link here:

Caney on the TT Forum is running a 425bhp TT Coupe from a 1.8 IIRC, but that's beaten by lego man, who's upgraded his 1.8 to a 2008cc 495bhp monster. G12MOX's got 450bhp out of his TTC too.

The 756bhp is a 1.8 in a Mk2 4wd Golf... must have cost megabucks!

I've got a 1.8t 2005 ibiza FR.

It remapped from 150bhp standard to 210bhp.

Formula Palmer Audi series run these engines at cira 300bhp with another 60bhp on over boost.

Any tuning will be done with reliability in mind as it is a single make championship where the cars are all owned and run by Palmer. Looks like Mountune Racing do the engines for them.

Indeed Mountune do build the FPA engines and we also supply the FIA Formula 2 units which are also based on the VAG block. These run 452bhp with 480bhp in overboost. Details here

The chaps at J-tech are really rather talented when it comes to the 1.8t.
www.jtechautomotive.co.uk Check out their Golf+ cover car, a Mk2 golf with a 1.8t putting out silly power.

Depends on your definition of safe and how much of the engine you want to change. A standard AGU 150hp 20vt can be tuned to 250ish before internals are unable to take the strain. It has been said before that it is the torque that kills the bottoms ends more so than peak horsepower and revs. 20vt can be built to rev up to 8k but 6-7 is far safer.

A BAM code 225hp has forged internals and larger crank pins/bolts and will take more abuse, but still require lots of work to go beyond 350 toward 450hp.. as with all engines the cost of getting the extra 10% once you have already doubled the stock power becomes very expensive!!

IHI is a type of turbo fitted to Subaru WRX. You can buy a adapted manifold that allows the VF22 or VF33 to be attached and these can run in exess of 300hp.

Manifolds that allow a range of GT Garret turbos to be fitted are readily available to. Even truck turbos have been used before but space becomes a problem as the turbo sits quite high near the firewall.

I think most of you are missing the 'safely' point. Anything above 300 is going to need reinforced internals/and or periodic rebuilds.
