shaandaar

lal quila [personal fave from student days, featured on the bbc curry mile docu]

shere khan [maker of the sauces you get in the supermarket]

royal naz [curry chef of the year 6yrs running]

(from shirts post in june 2009)

Are these still recommended or is their a new king of curry mile?

Not been in ages but previously, a lot of the big names were average at best.

The greatest curry i've had in Manchester was in some indian greasy spoon near Aflecks Palace. No idea what it was but it tasted superb.

Mughli is good. Variable but interesting is the Sanam Sweet Centre (the sweets are always good; the other food can be variable)

if you mean within sight of afflecks then I'm suprised you are still alive hehe I used to live opposite afflecks and the takeaways surrounding it were no-go's.

along the street and down a back alley that looks abandoned is 'this n that'. manchester legend that place, serves rice n three curries on one plate. food is fantastic but the decor makes a 1970s wimpey look modern!

Always the best ones

Years ago I once stumbled across an Indian 'cafe' in Bradford that turned out to be someone's home. I sat their living room on a beer garden type bench and sampled the best curry I have ever tasted. All for about £1.50.

I could never find the house again - somewhere in Manningham.

It wasn't a takeaway (well, not primarily anyway). They used to serve the curries in those old bowls you got with kellogs cornflakes and yep, the decor was shocking hehe

I went to the Shere Khan a couple of months back with the missus and it was awful.

- Blank look on waiters face when asked if they did Chicken Passanda or Butter Chicken like he's never heard of them.
- Chicken Korma was way too sweet.
- Both mains were just little pieces of meat with sauce no peppers, onions etc.
- There was a hair on my plate.
- Peshwari naan was coated in sugar and again far too sweet.

Couldn't fault the poppadoms though!

I went to an East is East in Preston, I assume it's the same rabble. Average at best, with knowledgeless staff. Being Preston it was full of 'What's the 'ottest you do', knife and fork the wrong way round brigade.

As mentioned above, it's all about finding a rat infested slum. Best food, and stick your head in once a month you get treated like a maharajah. My favorite has long since closed, he got his furniture from an auction, it was old Wimpy stuff IIRC, adorned with upsidedown Simpsons tablecloths.

He did a Chicken Achari that was tops.

... It wasn't Wimpy stuff, it was Little Chef, he even had the salt and pepper shakers.

I wouldn't touch anything on the Curry Mile these days - it's awfull. It really has gone downhill over the past 5-10 years and is now populated pissed people who don't really care how the food tastes.

As stated above, for decent curries now you need to head into the city centre - Akbars and East z East are the best.

The person above talking about the curry houses opposite Afflecks Palace is talking about the Curry Cafes in the Norhtern Quarter - Yes they are still there and are absolutely fantastic. Think greasy spoon cafes with bolted down plastic seating serving fresh indan food. There's no menu, they just produce 3 different curries each day and you chose which one you want or just have all 3. However, they are only open at lunchtime. There are several but the most famous is probably This n That.

I've had curries in Bradford, Birmingham, and Manchester, but by far the best still remains Mother India in Glasgow - fantastic quality food and BYOB.
