Done a HPI for a mate:

Plate Transfer

Scrapped

Exported
There is no record of this registration being exported.

Stolen
There is no record of this registration being stolen.

Stolen & Recovered
This registration was recorded as stolen & recovered on XXXXX 2007.

Insurance Write-off
There is no record of this registration being written-off.

Vehicle I.D. Check
There is no record of this registration being subject to a Vehicle Identity Check.

Should I be worried about the stolen recovered bit?

What does it mean - has the insurance co paid out or was it stolen for a day and then returned to the previous owner?

Will this make future buyers (in a year or so) run a mile?
will dealers refuse to take it in trade in like they would a cat c/d?

I think this is strange as it is not coming back as a "cat a/b/c/d/x write off" so perhaps must have been recovered before payout and with no damage?

Can anyone in the trade comment?

Did you HPI the reg. number or the VIN number?

The report states that the plate has been subject to change, depending on the date this plate was fittied the numberplate could have been on a differant car that was stolen recovered?

I would do another HPI check but on the VIN for peace of mind

Is it much cheaper than a non stolen/rec one?

Given the choice of 2 identical cars at the same price, but one with a S/R marker, which would you buy?

The seller claims to know nothing of it. Indeed he has a HPI report with no heading for stolen/recovered. Its the first time I've noticed a separate heading "stolen/recovered". Must use a different HPI check provider, perhaps not linked to a police database like the one I used.

Its up at £4500 "for a quick sale" comparable cars are advertised at £5100.

So 10% less, rather than the 25% I'd aim for when buying a cat c or d damage repaired. I reckon its worth a punt, but may make resale harder.

It could the registration number that has been involved in a theft before, but on another vehicle. This will be clear on a full check - check how the plate change dates tally with the dates of the theft.

Give that man a pint.

Car wears a private plate.

The reg number was put on the car in august 2009. The wording of the HPI report says "this registration was recorded stolen".

That registration wasn't even on this car on that date, so doesn't apply.

So why do they bother saying it!
