When I had to renew my car insurance last year I used various online comparison sites.

One came out much cheaper so I spoke to them to see why, and was told they were just trying to get into the market sector I fell into.

So I went for the policy, which was through a broker.

I had an accident this year and claimed and everything was fine, until I received a document from the insurance company saying I would lose my ncb.

This seemed strange to me as I always go for protected ncb (I have/had full ncb), so I dug out the original policy and there it was, ncb was not selected.

My mistake I thought, although at the back of my mind I was sure there was no way I would have missed this off my original search.

Anyway it has not come round to renewal time again and the broker has written to me (with a good price again to be fair) but has said that I will effectively keep my ncb if I stay with them as I opted for their equivalent policy.

So what seems to have happened is that they have substituted their own ncb type insurance for the actual insurance company ncb protection.

Further they are now suggesting that other insurance companies may not accept their policy as proof of ncb.

So it seems their policy is inferior, but I do not remember ever opting for their equivalent over the insurance company one?

Clearly this is my fault for not spotting the issue when I received the original policy document, but I am wondering if this is common practice and what I should do to recover the situation?

All advice appreciated.

If I had noticed at the time then I would not have taken the policy, but it seems I have no choice to go with it, it will cost at least double to start again with 0 ncb elsewhere and their quote for this year is competitive.

tricky situation, but think if in 5 years when you leave them other insurers dont accept their ncb you'll have to start all over again anyway.
