Hi folks!

Needing a little help - I'm 19 at the moment and things are really starting to sink in! I'm stuck in a dead end job (civil servant) and desperatley looking for a good trade to get into! I recentley applied to a offshore aprrenticeship but, was declined due to me fking up the apptitude test! I'm looking to try and go to college and do a course in mechanical engineering or civil engineering but, don't have a clue what to do! Anyone able to offer a little advice on what to do?

Cheers

Max

How can a bunch of internet randoms know what's the best course for you?

We need more info:

How did you do in your GCSEs? What are your interests? Do you show any aptitude for engineering (mechanical, civil etc) through any of your hobbies?

But it's all about you wanting to do something.

Due to the fact you failed the aptitude test. Then you will probably best off staying as a civil servant.

I'd look for a course in underwater knife-fighting and badger-bating... That should give your cv an original twist

What are your other qualifications?

You want a "trade" - which one? In this market I am not convinced that many tradesmen will be taking on apprentices etc..

University? I went when I was 21 and it changed everything for me. I'd left school at 15 and done some apprenticeship things then ended up working in a factory. It was easy work but no future. My girlfriend at the time was off to Uni so I thought I'd apply as well. I had to do a foundation year involving A level Maths and physics. That, for me, was the hardest year of the 4 I did.

Anyway, I had a cracking time, it opened up my eyes to what I'm capable of and made me realise that I'm a lot smarter than I had given myself credit for. Other bonuses include st loads of women and booze.

Well try again then. If it is what you want to do reapply. You won't get very far giving up as soon as something doesn't go right. What are your interests? Best to have a job you enjoy doing than a well paid one you hate in my opinion.

If you have some A levels or another qualification which can get you 'ucas points' I would highly reccomend university.

If you are interested in this, dont go and do a doss course, go and do something which will open doors into a good profession afterwards. It will be the best three / four years of your life.

I know, but i'm essentialy looking for advice on good trades to get into or people that have been in a similar situation and what they done.

GCSE's were okay A-maths B-Physics C-English C-Chemistry A-Geography C-Graphic communication

Interests are basicly motocross and weightlifting.

I've always wanted to be a civil engineer but, not sure on how to get started!

Could you do some A Levels at night school whilst working and then use those to get to Uni? Getting on a course suitable for engineering?

Also, you could write to companies for whom you would wish to work and ask them what they want from an apprentice? Once you have the answer, then you can get on with getting those qualifications?

I didn't actually fail the test - basicly there is 1200 people getting narrowed down to under 100 with this test. I wasn't really prepared for it and wish I done some revision - might have had a different outcome!

What's the point of us listing 'good trades' if you have neither the desire nor aptitude to do them? You're young enough to do whatever you want; but it has to be what YOU want.

My brother did this - studied a Biology A Level whilst being an office monkey because after he left school (post A Level) realised his career wasn't going anywhere. He's just finishing his 1st year of a BSc in Biology and is smashing the exams.

It can be done with the determination and discipline. He self-taught his Biology A Level with one of those learn at home packs. He started uni at the age of 21.

Civil engineering isnt a trade as such, its more of a profession. A lot of calculation and drawing, not to mention the regulation and other assorted paperwork.

What do you want from life?

Ok, so take the test again and study for it so that you get a good result?

Out of interest, what is your actual job and why is it dead end?
