Where did they go?

When I were a lad swimming pools had proper deep ends that you couldn't touch the bottom in with scuba gear, and they had 10 metre diving boards.

Nowadays pools have chest-deep 'deep ends' and no diving boards.

When did that happen?

Not sure, but I was in the Aldershot Army pool not long ago and their shallow end is 2m. Proper pool that. Olympic size too.

My local swimming pool has a deep end, and 10 metre diving board.
Not going to tell you where though, don't want loads of people turning up if there's no more left in the UK.

they havent been filled in! unless they've been knocked down they are still about. Most 25m pools had 6ft deep ends as the norm. However....when building a pool now why bother? You cant have people diving in 6ft of water and you only need 4ft to swim in and tumble...so why waste time and money on a "deeper" deep end?

And diving pits are a huge waste - they only get used by a VERY small number of people for diving yet the water volume is huge....why would a council build one? (and dont expect private firms to do it - pools are wet money pits) they are just a magnet for accidents and tossers.

Most pools used to be something like 3'6" at the shallow end, slowly getting deeper to about half way, and then shelving off to 12' at the deep end...

I'm guessing H&S as well, no more 5m boards to jump off onto other swimmers below, so no requirements for 12' deep pools.

Beechdale Baths in Nottingham used to have a seperate diving pool with 3 and 5m boards but I have no idea whether it's still open.

The diving pool was properly deep, remember spending ages as a kid daring each other to go off the 5m board and then try and touch the bottom. I think it was 4m.

Seemed bloody high from up there when we were 8 iirc!! biggrin

That layout of main pool and diving pool with 3 and 5m boards is almost exactly the same as I remember Beechdale being in my post above.
