watching something or other on TV the other night, they showed a sequence of a celeb getting out of a car in broad daylight, all of the assorted press photographers were shooting with flash on - which made me wonder why - I assume it is in the hope that other's flash do not interfere with their photo?

flash gives each photogapher his own controllable light source- if the sun is at an unflattering angle, it'll cast all sorts of unflattering shadows across the face. even its just a cloudy day, celeb ill just look dull. Also, with pap work, id imagine a lot of it is rushed handheld stuff, so they need a faster shutter speed as possible so they dont have any camera shake. blurry photos wont sell, so a nice strong flash will help keep shutter speeds fast.

A nice sharp picture, of a well lit celeb, will sell well. - a dull, slightly blurry shot, with odd shadows across the face, does not.

hope that sort of answers your question!

Im not a fan of paps, a gang of them bothered me last year, and they were not a friendly bunch.

In a word, yes smile

Remember a story from F1 magazine (I think) where a photographer was positioned above Massa on top of some building as he celebrated winning a race. He had a long lens so pointed it down to take a shot, much to his appreciation another photographers flah fired and created a wonderfully moody shot. Think the guy admitted he probably couldn't have set the shot up any better hehe

As they say, photography as an art form always has good luck working against it wink

Cheers.

I nearly always use fill flash. Indoors (bounced) it gives a soft light that's quickly flattering to faces; outside in cloudy conditions it adds a little zap and a subtle sparkle to the eye; in bright sunlight it helps to fill in those hideous dark shadows.
