When am I a student till?

Hey guys,
Wierd question. I've just finished uni and I have a summer job, I don't graduate until sept/oct so can i still work tax free until then? As I am technically still a student as I could (shouldn't do) be retaking over the summer and my student id etc expires in September.

I'm not sure you'll get away with it mate, its probably easier to take the hit rather than have to give it back later

If you've just finished uni, you've already had a lot of other people's tax money spent on you. Now it's time you started to pay it back.

AFAIK you can still only earn a certain amount before tax in any tax year anyway.

Directgov or a similar site will have the answer.

There isn't a student 'tax free' status, just the standard tax free limit which everyone has (around £6500 at the moment). Most students simply do not earn over this. If you will be earning over £6500 in a single tax year, you will pay tax.

To 993tt it was just a question im happy paying it but don't want to unless I have to was just seeing if I do because I know the inland revenue will use any technicality to screw me out of money. The Inland Revenue can't "screw" you out of anything. The lawas are defined and quite clear, they don't make them up on the fly. The fact that you might not currently know these laws/regulations suggests you should talk to an accountant.

Well its ok, its not like im gonna be a tax dodger I'm happy to pay. Was just a simple question, i have now been informed. Thats the idea of posting on a forum, they are a useful source of information. I was Just responding to your post as i didn't care much for the tone.

Well as far as i knew you're tax free (upto a certain amount) when on a single payroll. And i was informed by the inland revenue that i had to pay tax on one of my jobs when i had two. If i was honest i don't know the ins and outs of the tax system, hence my original question!

Students pay the same tax as everyone else. It's just most students don't earn more than their personal allowance, for which no tax is paid. If you will earn more than the personal allowance between this April and next, you will be paying tax...

Essentially, the basics are:

• Everyone has a "tax free" limit
• Students rarely earn over this
• If you have 2 jobs, the "tax free" limit may be split between them, or used on only 1
• HMRC don't actively try to screw people (outwith the law)
• They're actually quite helpful if you call them

Ah, that's probably the issue then. I was IT contracting in all the holidays, making about £500 a week, then worked 6 nights a week as the manager of the Union bar when I was there to pay my way. Well, except the first year, where I spunked my entire £5000 loan, the £6000 I had saved up in my gap year and still ended up short of rent by the end of it. I did buy an MG Midget though.
