I have thought about this for my Boxster S. I have come to the following conclusion:

It isn't worth it.

The money needed to make even the slightest difference is quite large and the car won't go much quicker.

Do yourself a favour. Save the money and put it towards your next car....996 cab/turbo etc.

If you want to tune the Boxster you really need to do an engine transplant to get any real gains... this is expensive and you end up with a fast Boxster S which is stills slower than a Turbo for about the same money.

RUF said:

The Porsche Boxster needed more power.

RUF supplies the solution: the RUF 3400 S equipped with a 310 bhp powerplant based on that of the Porsche 911 Carrera (996).

The result: superb driveability.

Driving pleasure is transformed to another level; the large torque increase at low engine speeds produces the RUF driving experience.

Thats about your main option.

However, if you fancy throwing stupid amounts of money at the Boxster you can due to its mid-engined layout. By wacking on some turbos or something you won't screw the weight distribution too badly

I have a 2.5 boxster, now 290.000 km on the clock.
I'll put another 100.000 on top of that and then I'll take the car to RUF for the transplant job, but I intend to add a couple of turbo's to make it really worthwhile. Result should be around 360-375 BHP.

Why not a 996, because the boxster has an axcelent layout roadholding is superb, and nobody will expect this kind of performance out of an "old boxster".

Will keep you posted
