I have recently heard a high pitched rattle/ticking whilst the car is idling. It isn't very loud although this rattling seems to subside as I depress the clutch.

The car sees four full bore standing starts once a month at each autocross competition, but typically only up to second gear before the first bend, so I would be surprised if after a year and bit the clutch is done for.

Is my clutch on the way out? I don't feel any difference in the biting point, so what else might the problem be, if it is indeed a problem?

What's the damage to my wallet if I need to replace the clutch on a 996?

It may be the flywheel, in which case replace it before it destroys the engine.

When the dual mass flywheel goes bad you hear transmission noise. When you push down the clutch pedal the transmission gears stop moving. Jeff

9M I appreciate the different basis of the 996 engine to previous incarnations, I was wondering if the dual mass flywheel breaking down on a 996 is far more serious than one breaking down on a 964 / 993?
I have heard of countless 964 having this problem, but do not recall it being serious enough to finish the engine.
Grateful for any insight...cheers..

i would get it checked if i were you. recently posted what has happened to my 996. the clutch and flywheel went of out balance and resulted in main bearing collapse and engine rebuild. still in the process of trying to get porsche to pay for it as mine had only done 24k. kagey
