advisory coolant chnage at 4 yrs
Discussion
My Z4MR is in for Insp 2 - had garage on asking if I'd authorise a coolant change. Claimed it was advisory at 4 yrs.
Now in 10 yrs of e39 FBMWSH nowt was ever mentioned of such.
Insp 2 schedule says check coolant level and top up if necessary - so my response was if it was needed it would be inclued in Insp 2 (which is afterall an obscene amount of cash but that's another matter) - as it says top up if necessary - then do that and that alone thanks.
Is this a case of they give with one and try to get back with the other... as I'd managed to get a good deal on Insp 2? Feel a little used as they have been a good garage.
oh...and the cost.... to drain and fill with coolant ....£125... WTF is BMW now recommending Haut Brion for cooling!

If you're planning on keeping the car for any length of time Id have the coolant done every 2 years. It has corrosion inhibitors as part of its make up.
If you do decide to have it done, make sure you ask the garage to drain the block. Most will only drain from the radiator which only releases about 50% of the coolant as it saves time and effort.

I'd also wager it is a drain from radiator as well.If you do decide to have it done, make sure you ask the garage to drain the block. Most will only drain from the radiator which only releases about 50% of the coolant as it saves time and effort.
Appreciate all the comments on preventionary nature but really it begs question why it isn't integrated into the Inspection cycle.
The way it is presented after you've booked the car in and signed off on what is to be done they come back with it smacks a tad like arm twisting.
So as it stands on the M at 48k miles if your to take the advisories your looking at the crica 800 for the Inspection 2, 90 ish for brake fluid, 150 for aircon and 125 for coolant. 400 notes for fluids every two years on top of service.
I'm not griping about the M premium - knew that before I bought - but the surprise is the discrepancy between the e39 only ever getting the brake fluid done - aircon and coolant never mentioned in ten years of FSH at the same garage.
The brake fluid 'service' is listed in the service booklet, but I don't see any mention of the coolant in there nor in either the Z4 or supplementary Z4M owner's manuals, so why not simply do it yourself and save £100. No potential future purchaser will know any different as if it's probably not recorded on the BMW computers anyway.
If you do it yourself, please remember: DO NOT USE TAP WATER as this will end up 'furring' up your cooling pack and ultimately reduce its effectiveness (don't ask me how I know), use denatured/distilled water and the correct concentration of BMW or equivalent aftermarket coolant.

Fair-dos.
I can see benefit of a refresh of liquid.
What surprises me is the total omission when the e39 has been with them allied to it popping up post-agreement for what can/can't be do at inspection.
...and to be honest collant isn't Haut Brion... so 100+ notes on labour....
Apologies for a gripe but it seems any interaction leads to sundries being foisted onto the punter.
Also, if lifetime of coolant is deteriotating beyond two years it ought to be integral to the inspection cycle not a 'top-up' farless being pushed as a new three figure bill.
If essential it should be on the label c.f. valve clearances if it isn't then ...... WTF?

mmm-five - That was exactly the point I made with the dealer today. In my cynical/skeptical view you (BMW/dealer see you) stumping up the thick end of a grand for an inspection & brake ... what's another 125 quid... in for a penny in for a pound.
