It's going to have to be. However fabricating an alloy sheet cover just to stop dirt getting into the bellhousing will at least do some good, though it won't stop the bottom of the bellhousing grounding, especially if you are running the car low.

Should be fine! how much clearance is there to the floor? You'd see big scrapes if its an issue and the previous owner would have had to sort it.

How far below the chassis rail is it?

oh dear, was hoping someone would tell me this is ok.....surely this is not the first mk built and someone decided to use a low level sump?...i am no expert and the guy who built it surely knew and saw the result when he mated the two together???......seems odd to me thats all

its not the ground clearance that concerns me...its the open front facing part of the bell housing allowing road crap to enter.....will this be ok? surely the builder knew enough to know this was not a concern...well i hope so

Gary, I expect you are going to have a good few questions in the coming months. You need to get on www.locostbuilders.co.uk , which has a dedicated MK section.

You didn't like my first answer, dealing with precisely that point, then?

Hi,

I wouldn't worry about it. I've got a westfield speedsport with a low level sump (a raceline one) and my gearbox is now the lowest point on my car. There is a curved chassis bar to help protect the gearbox but is not low enough... I run the car pretty low and the gearbox has ground on the floor a few times at speed (about 1/4 inch missing off it now) and it doesn't seem to bother it. Just check the gearbox bolts are still tight afterwards! I'd personaly rather the gearbox than the sump. I've heard other people with westfields grind the lug off the bottom of the gearbox to give more clearance, but I recon I'll just let the road do it for me.... My gearbox doesn't have a splash shield either but since I wouldn't go out in it in the rain and I don't go grass tracking in it, I don't think its really a concern.

Andy...
