First heard about this today and was wondering what the crack is

Been told that if you are going travelling half way through a year that you have been working then you will more than likely be due to a tax refund

Anyone know how it is calculated? If you went exactly six months in to the year, would you get half of the tax paid so far that year back?

Sounds nonsense to me. The basic principal is you must be outside of the UK for a complete tax year to establish non-residency. If you establish non-residency then you can benefit from split year treatment which appears to be what you are talking about. In this case you simply apply your full tax free allowences over the time you were working, whihc if you are PAYE means you will get some money back.

Anyone on PAYE will pay tax based on expected earnings for a complete tax year.

Say you are earning twelve thousand a year, after six months you will have paid a certain amount of tax. However the tax free allowance is about six thousand, so all the tax paid paid can be reclaimed if you don't earn any more in the UK during that tax year.

In days gone by these refunds were quick, due to the efforts of winky they can be delayed somewhat.

IIRC Years ago you could claim tax relief on earnings for weeks spent outside the uk. You did not have to be out for a complete year, I think it was something like 90 days in a year. Stopped by Mrs.Thatcher in the early 80's.

Yep, my gf just did this after being made redundant. It took months of back and forth with the Revenue.

You would particularly benefit if you were a higher rate tax payer and your earnings at the point you stopped work were just under the 40% threshold.
