Engine rattle/tap vw golf
Discussion
hi,
wondering if any of you guys could have an educated guess at a problem that has arisen with my golf v6 4motion
about 1 mth ago my oil light came on so i pulled over and realised that oil was coming from thhe bottom of the sump, i bought some oil and topped it up to get home. i put it into a garage next day and result was cracked sump. i had new sump, oil and filter fitted and it has now developed a rattle/tapping.
the noise only occurs once the engine gets upto optimum temprature, it only makes a noise when it reaches 2000(ish)rpm and disssapears(or cannot hear it over the engine noise)at about 4000rpm.
the noise seems to be rythmic and not random rattling.
i have just changed the oil and took it up a grade hoping that would sort it ou but it was to no avail.
to note i have visited a few garages and had various reports back, i.e bottom end shells (i assume that would be a random rattle and not rythmic) another one said the cam as it run for a little while (1-2 miles) with the oil light on.
any suggestions on this?

When you say oil light was it the oil level warning light (usual orange) or the low pressure warning (red)? If it was the low pressure then you could have been running for ages with too little oil.
If thats the case then some major part of the engine has probably worn. The big end bearings being the likely culprit. This will indeed cause a rythmic rattling as the conrod will knock against the crank as the crank spins round. If it is this then it's a new engine or a rebuild I'm affraid.
I could be the cams but if even if it is the big end bearings wont be far behind.
