Why do gay/camp men have that certain tone of voice?
Discussion
This is a totally serious question, so please no stupid/offensive answers. My gf and I have just been watching telly and seen a gay/camp man on a reality show talking with the typical gay/camp tone of voice. We're trying to work out why they have that tone of voice, I'm pretty sure you know the sound I'm on about. In the absence of one of my gay mates being around to ask, can anyone explain why that tone of voice seems to basically only appear in those demographics? Is it just a sub-culture thing (a bit like "gangsta"/"street" tones of voice, but more pronounced)?
ETA: obviously not all gay/camp men sound like that, but the people that do almost always fall into the demographic

Don't put gay and camp in the same sentence as a lot of gays don't do camp infact it really pisses off a lot gay people.
I hate camp guys I just want to jam their floppy haircuts in their mouths if anything to stop the high pitched cackle they insist on making every 30 seconds.
Very interesting question, this. it has got me thinking too. Whilst I am not gay, I have fI hate camp guys I just want to jam their floppy haircuts in their mouths if anything to stop the high pitched cackle they insist on making every 30 seconds.
ked a bloke who is, so let me ask him and i will come back to you.
I suspect you don't mean 'gay', as such. I've met more than a few gay blokes who didn't make a big deal of it. And one who came out of the closet to a rounding cheer of "Thank f
k for that".
It is annoying. But I followed two young girls today (no, not that way) speaking like a charicature fat, black, female 'comedienne'. It was every bit as fake/annoying.

bit like when you see chav kids talking in that clipped, pseudo gangsta accent. They think it makes some sound hard especially when they point a finger at you and go "brapp, brapp", Tim Westwood style, like they are shooting a gun. Some kid tried that the other night when I went out with some friends from work to a guy I work with. Kid didn't look quite so clever 30 seconds later when his nose was all over his face. Royals, you just can't take them anywhere...

Camp is what happens when you have a man trying to be feminine, which is kind-of logical if he's gay.
(Not the same for all gay men, but for some they definitely try to be 'girly' and this is what causes the camp behaviour IMO.)
I go on its an image they have adopted and it works for them. Like when straight guys wear tweed, smoke a pipe and read Chap magazine or wear trackies, have lots of bling and talk like their favourite rapper. If you think camp is hard to understand, what about camp yet straight?
I met one of these a couple of weeks ago, as camp as a bivouac on Salisbury plain, backs to the wall, lads, and all that. Then his wife and kids showed up. Ever since I have been in a Baldrick-style mind loop.
