I cant decide!

what M car to go for!
with a limited budget i could easily buy a very nice e36 m3, could about stretch to a early e46 m3 at about 10K or suprisingly an e39 m5!
what are peoples thoughts on them? as appealing as the M5 is, i dont need a big car and its just adding more running costs.
main fight is between the e36 and e46, i like the idea of the newer look, and briefly driving one felt so special! unfortunately chances to drive them are few and far between and cant really get past the initial 'I NEED this car' so what would you pistonheaders advise? i have use of a company car most of the time so will be used occasional daily use visitin friends etc, and track use.
where would you spend your money?

Well the coupe is out of my price range and had heard bad things about the handleing of the z3?
I also just liked the fact that if I wanted to go driving down to italy or somthing with a few friend I have the space in a 3 series plus have loved the 325 I'm running at the minute, but I wouldn't totaly discount the Z3.
see i would have thought an e36 would be best at holding its value as they are pretty much rock bottom at the moment, wouldnt be suprised if they start going up after people have trashed/pimped/not cared for half of them.
and 1 more thing is that if i was going for a 2 seater again, as much as i love the beamers, I'd probably go for a 4.5l TVR Chimaera, but i was wanting to get away from needing 2 cars really (business car has no practical merit at all) hence going from a 2 seater and the bm to just a quicker more special bm.

Z3M is fine if you can drive...
E39's are mega - I got mine last week and it is the most capable car you could ever wish for...
E36 M3, go pre Evo
E46 M3, buying any performance car at the absolute bottom of the market will always end up costing more... better to up the budget if you want one of these though...
If you want a fast, capable and exclusive E46 - why not consider an Alpina B3, 3.3 straight six, 280BHP, switchtronic and great handling. You could have mine for £5.5k! I can't justify an M5 and an Alpina!

Mr Jony!
How do?
The keys are sitting here waiting for you to take my e36 vert for a spin, trust me mate you will go for the e36 M3. They are amazing value at the moment and if you get a nice one maybe a decent investment too.
As much as i would like an e46 M3, i cant justify the extra money sitting in the garage just to be used on sunny days, a ropey one imho will tank in value and cause you a load of grief with running costs.
E36 M3 fantastic compromise.

[quote]how does the M5 compare to the Alpina??

Completely different. B3 3.3 is a civilised M3. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't as quick as a E46 M3 cross country though. M5 is a real train. Obviously a heavier car, but not by as much as you would think, the extra 120 hp shows though...
The great thing about the B3 is you can drive it in auto when you just want pootle around, Or if you are in a hurry take control of the gearbox (using the micro switches on the steering wheel) and you can then push on knowing your not going to get a dodgy downchange mid corner...

Like the B3 idea if JonyPI does autos.
JonyPI has the budget for a flawless late 90s Evo and I'm sure he knows what a Vanos is. Why advocate a 4/5 year older pre Evo with 10% less power/pace, slower steering etc etc?

Horses for courses really... I just like the pre Evo cars, single Vanos and I think they pull harder... Evo more at top end. What about a really nice GT? Not the GT2 though...
Anyone know why I can't quote properly, beginning to think it's a google chrome thing...

Hard to show you the code without it actually working. Quote this and you'll see what I mean.

FWIW I currently have an E36 (for sale) and an E46. If you only have 10k to spend then a very good E36 is a wiser buy than an E46. Either will cost you money to run and insure and if you blow your entire budget on the purchase you'll be trying to run and E46 on a shoestring - not possible IMO.
I honestly couldnt buy an auto, i know they are good autos and everything but as a 2nd/track car auto is out of the question, otherwise i had looked at the alpinas!
I'm not going to fuss too much over evo/pre evo if the right car comes up and its either one i dont overly care that much! Its all about the condition and how its been looked after, though after a recent show i do have a hankering for a TVR chimaera once again! buuuuuut the M3 is so much more practical day to day and park it on the drive and wont get much attention from the yobos not that i have any problems where i live......hmmm not a bad decision to be having to make a 22 lol
