I've always thought that warming up the car before any spirited driving is important and I always keep it under 3000 RPM in the Type R for around 10 minutes then slowly increase the max RPM a 1000 RPM every 5 minutes. This means I don't go into VTEC until around 20 mins or so (which comes in about 5500).

I am interest in finding out others procedure but maybe more interestingly if you don't do one as deciding its pointless.

Same as every car I've owned, I don't go above 3k for about 10 minutes/a few miles, after a bit I'll go upto 4k, then say 20 minutes I'll use VTEC and WOT

15 mins for warming up? i usually give it a few miles, its fully warmed up by then, VTEC it is! biggrin

My EP3 and S2000 has always warmed up very quickly.

Yeh the water warms up really quick on my Type R but the oil will still not be warm when the temp gauge is at "warm"

PS this thread is getting over run with Type R owners!

PPS does your EP3 temperature gauge not sit in the middle when it's warm? All my other cars have always sit in the middle, the EP3 sits just below half way?

The only problem with that theory being that you're looking at a water temperature gauge which, thanks to the thermostat, will show the coolant as being warm quite rapidly.
What's actually relevant is the engine oil temperature which in most modern car's there's no way of monitoring. The oil will warm significantly more slowly than the coolant, in very few cars will it take much less than 15 minutes to reach normal operating temperature.

Prolonged pootling does no good either, besides which a fast warm-up is essential to emissions these days...

... so once the water temp is up, I'm happy to give it death. Never had a problem.

Yeh thats the other take on it. Is it better to have to put low load on the engine (i.e. less than 3000 RPM) but it not getting up to temperature for a while, or putting more load on but less time in the cold zone.

Interesting to see most do the same as me, keep them coming tho.

Most of my journeys are <20min. I would never use my car properly.

FFS If I did that I'd never get above 4000rpm on my commute let alone hitting the VTEC laugh

I've got an FN2 (so yeah, not a 'proper' CTR! ) but normally its 10 mins before I give it mild VTEC beans. After 20 mins or so its fair game though. Did the running in procedure (i.e. no VTEC before the first 1k miles) and have been driving it like this since, and it barely uses oil, so cant be doing it bad!

I wont properly boot it untill its been driving for about 10minutes, coolant is warm within about 3, I keep the turbo use very light untill about 10mins.

Is an oil temp guage worth investing in?

Its its cold out below 5 deg's or below in winter it can take a good 10 mins of normal driving.

10 - 15 + Deg's and a few mins of normal driving should see it fine for a ragging.

Thats what i do anyway, as you get to drive it you can tell by the way it works if its warmed up anyway + the Vtec wont engage if the oil hasnt sorted itself out yet.

I always keep the revs under 4k until I see the oil temp gauge lifting off the first marker. Takes about 15mins.

For me its no more than 2.5k rpm til warm, and I always try to idle for 5 mins before pulling away in the morning.

In winter, I usually wait until the needle has moved off totally cold, which is anything from 10 mins.

Tomorrow, I'll be driving my car for the first time in a week, it will get 5 mins idle time then taking it easy on way home, 2k rpm first 10-15 miles then up to 2.5k for the next 20 miles then whatever I need after that, and i'll give it a B road ragging on the road just before home to clear it out (60 miles home from airport)

I agree, it's the oil temp that's important.

My Audi limits the revs until the oil hits 60 degrees, takes about 10-15 mins. Normal operating temp is around 100 degs.

I'd rather increase revs than increase load while the engine's warming up, happy to have more gentle acceleration than having to push t'pedal down more
