Maybe a totally shonky, early, Cat D 318i saloon.

But you would probably be better off with the Rover.

Alright I get the picture.

Now, I have been offered an e36 318is with 140000 miles. What should I be looking out for with these. Its got full service history on a 98 reg with leather and its auto. They want £1100. Is this ok.

Help guys.

1. Rust
2. Gearbox problems
3. Cooling systems works

Other than that, general stuff like condition of tyres, service history/MOTs. E36 parts are relatively cheap

I didn't know you could get an auto 318iS. Every day's a school day.

E46:

1) Rust
2) Front control arm bushes (usually entire arm needs replacing £££)
3) Cooling system
4) VANOS (on anything above 120k miles) (if 6 cylinder)
5) Rear subframe mounts on pre 2000 cars (they tear away from the body)

E36:

As per "Vee" above - but to add to that, rear suspension bushes (RTAB) - which will manifest itself as a clonk when changing gear (manual) and potentially loud clonks when selecting 'D' or 'R' (Auto).
The car will also handle rather oddly...

IMHO the E36 is a better car than the E46 ever was...

Should be able to find a reasonable 323/325 saloon for around £1k.

Worst rot areas are wheel arches, but they also rust around the bootlid (number plate).

At that price braket I wouldn't limit myself to any particular car as they all fall into 2 categories:
nicely maintained bargain and problematic money-pit.

I wondered what that noise was!! was getting worried after reading the other thread about E46 and rubber doughnut seals etc.
