Hotel/B&B Recommendations in Scotland

Doing a tour of some of Scotland in August and am looking for some recommendations on B&B's/hotel's in the following locations .....

Oban
Fort William
Portree (Isle of Skye)
Invergarry area
Inverness
Aviemoore

All sorts of place can be found, but I am looking for recommendations based on experience, please.

www.clunybankhotel.co.uk/ is a brilliant place and the food is the best local produce cooked to perfection, not expensive either.

the visitscotland.com is good for hotels and b&b's i've used it a few times on various visits to the highlands. Check out the deals pages.

Try the MacDonald Loch Rannoch hotel.

It's amazing.

Lovely rooms. fantastic food. The Malt bar Log fire, and plenty to see as well. about 20 mins from Pitlochry, which is about 40 miles from Aviemore.

Highly Recommended (if not bloody expensive)

I've toured most of those areas, johno. I'll dig through the places we stayed, remind myself of the best ones and post up some experiences tomorrow.

There was a smashing hotel in Portree as I recall. If you fancy a self-catering spot we went to the most fantastic place on Mull last year..

Portree: Cuillin Hills Hotel.

Great breakfast with a range of sausages - Wild Boar ones were brilliant. Great views overlooking Portree Harbour and, in 1999, modern freshly decorated comfortable rooms. Grub was really good and available from its posho restaurant or the bar next door depending on budget for the evening. Its also walking distance to Portree to go for different grub - I recall a curry house that was, surprisingly, rather good.

I'm digging up some other recommendations, now.

Not cheap BTW. But nice.

not a hotel, but for food in fort bill definately the Crannog for the best seafood in the universe. go for the langoustines there superb

aviemore's a difficult one used to be a bit tacky and still in the progress of upgrade but i guess the hilton, coylumbrige

If you go from Fort William to Malaig and then over the sea to Skye to Armadale you can then drive toward Portree stopping for the night at the Kinloch Lodge - www.kinloch-lodge.co.uk.

The food is great, especially for couples!

We've stayed there a few times and plan to stay there many more times!

Try not to stay in Aviemore - Go for Boat of Garten or Kingussie if you can. Exc range of B/b and hotels.

Holiday inn express in Inverness is good if you just want a no fuss hotel for not much money.

"Rockvilla Hotel". A small hotel with a good restaurant in Lochcarron. Try Halibut with mustard and parmasan topping...There is a place in Lochcarron I wouldn't recommend but won't name and shame here.
Eating out in that area, also the "Shieldaig Inn", part of a Hotel whose name escapes me, but i can get it if you need it, in Shieldaig (as seen on Rick Stein last week) go for Seafood Stew, Hotel seems good too. Also eating out "Off the Rails" in Plockton (in the railway station)

why not try the kings house hotel
good food, coal fire, nice whisky and when we were there sitting enjoying the above a rather large stag was staring in the window, very scottish.

skye. very nice seafood resturant at the harbour but cant remember the name of it. large plate of mussels.

going to oban. head to perth, then along to crief, comrie, loch earn, up to crainlarich then toward oban.
some of the best TVR driving around. give me call before hand and i'll follow on just for the blast

Oh...on Skye one simply must try the Three Chimneys - not cheap but wonderful food. And they have rooms now, I believe.

We're going via the BSB round at Croft on the 15th on the way up and via the BSB round at Cadwell Park on the 28th on the way down.

Couple of days in Glasgow at the start and Edinburgh on the way back. With one stop at Hawick to pay my respects to a legend and then the rest of the trip is basically ...

Glasgow to Oban
Oban round Ben Nevis to Fort William
Fort William to Mallaig
Mallaig to Armendale on Skye
Portree to Loch Torridon
Loch Torridon to ??????

Got that bit left at the moment and was contemplating going across to Aviemore but everyone seems to have a bit of downer on it .... considering some suggestions from Apache on other places to visit.

We're having a couple of days on Skye and at Loch Torridon ... the rest are one nighters really.

Looking forward to it a lot as I go to Edinburgh regularly on business and haven't 'explored' Scotland yet...

PerthshireGriff - I'll let you know when we're up and hopefully we can meet up for a blast and a beer on the way to Oban ( I was looking at the route you mentioned )

The Cairngorm Hotel (www.cairngorm.com) in Aviemore was pretty good when I stayed there a couple of years ago.
Although Aviemore itself isn't the nicest of places.

johno, stayed at the Holly Tree Hotel a couple of years ago, it's a converted railway station right on the edge of Loch Linnhe about 10 miles north of Oban. The food is excellent and is served in a restaurant that looks out over the Loch.
