gear box gate and weird noise

2nd gear in my car can be difficult to find for those unfamiliar with my car.

Someone suggested that it might be the gate that needs fixing? Adjusting? Is this right? I can't really recall what was being said as we were travelling about 90mph sideways at the time.

Also when I change down gear usually from 3rd to 2nd when I release the clutch and it bites I get a eeeeekkkkk noise. Sounds a bit like the sound if you got reverse by mistake but not so loud. Is this normal? I've noticed it recently.
