I was wondering if i could claim against my own insurance policy for mechanical work? I have a 2002 Polo 1.2 se which has had engine failure last week, and i cannot afford the repair costs.

No sorry, unless the mechanical failure was caused by a road traffic accident.

As said above only if the damage was done in an accident or incident such as water into the engine. Simple failure is a warranty issue, assuming it isn't due to missed servicing or similar.

I don't think it just has to be a road traffic accident.

A pleb at work decided to stick his car into 1st on the motorway, mashed his engine up big time. I guess it was an accident so he got his insurance to pay for some of the damage. It did take a bloody long time though and lots of highly amusing embarasing phone calls whilst at work.

Why are you calling us with this? would be my guess. I would be very surprised if your insurance entertain the idea of paying out because your 8 year old car has lunched its engine...

What was the cause of the engine failure?

On one hand it depends on the wording of your policy, but on the other every policy I've ever had has specifically excluded mechanical failure and wear + tear.
