Knowing that people own some quite expensive cars on here...

Just had my car and bike fail at the same time for different expensive reasons - hopefully should make me feel better hehe

And I am genuinely curious, I have only ever run cheapish cars in my life, so I want to know what is really considered an expensive repair!

Just spent £1700 on 2 new ignition coils, a new O2 sensor and a new catalytic converter but I'm sure there are more eye watering bills out there.

Once had to spend pushing on for £3k on my XJ8. The garage that carried out the work were also completely out of their depth (although I didn't realise it at the time) and the repair went tits up within 4 months.

£1500 on the engine in my old Stag. I shouldn't have done it but I couldn't bare to see the car scrapped/broken so I had the work done and sold it.

Does an exhaust count? I spent about £230 on a ss one for my sprint back in 1994. I've not spent more than that fixing anything since!

About £450 on a new airbag on a BMW 330. Should have been double that, but service manager misquoted the job and kept to the quoted price.

Nothing that will be in the big boys league, but I paid £1900 to have a refurbed engine fitted to my Volvo 850 T5 back in 2003, when I was a 19 year old University student. That was a bit painful, I tell thee.

A still painful 5 figure amount for rebuilding the motor of my 964 to Ruf RCT Evo spec following a post track day issue that saw the car very artfully sitting in a pool of its own oil!

Plenty of huge bills with work, but normally factored into the purchase and sale costs

Have a look at the blog for my S3! hehe

The highlight was the £7k for new short engine, new valves and turbo.

All piddling amounts so far! Try £10,081 for the sills replacement, wing repairs and lower half respray of a Silver Cloud . . . it was written off a few months later weeping

If that is not counted as it was a major overhaul, how about £6,803 for various suspension problems and other glitches on the Aston Martin PLUS £1,200 for a new set of wheels for the same (all at the same time!)

I also used to own a Bentley Turbo R and have LOTS of big bills from that one!

The small problem of a piston lunching the engine on my BMW M5. The final bill for an engine rebuild was close to £6900.

Mercedes paid for a new 7g gearbox on my old merc. Am told the part was retail at £3.5k + labour.

My mother reversed into a (clients) 911 Turbo. £20k.

Her insurance went up quite a bit.

Ouch - they're no better than the Turbo R's to maintain then. I was saving for one of these.
