I'm thinking of flying over to Germany to pick a set of wheels i've seen.

The race 2000 wheel. It's just a nice simple wheel with deep dishes.

I can't find a better new wheel for the price. I want a deep dish wheel for my 1990 944, but want something different. I have tried to find exactly what I want second hand, but
1) have had very little luck
2) have been told that I'm better off buying new as there will not be a huge difference in price (above set are £1500 inc. tyres.
3) have been told that even after the wheel has been refurb'ed, it's never going to be as good as a new wheel.

Does anyone know a good reason why I shouldn't get these wheels?

Firstly, Its just my personal point of view but I think non-Porsche wheels on a Porsche just don't look right. Porsche is one of the few car types where 99.9% of cars have Porsche wheels fitted. Anything else sticks out a mile off. Saying that it's purely a personal taste thing so if it makes you happy then go for it.

Secondly, Porsche issued a bulletin specifically stating that the fitting of 18" wheels to 944 is not recommended. 17" wheels can be fitted if you install the uprated caster mounts from a 968. There are details here:

and also some snazzy pictures of my garage floor. I have since discovered that you do not need to replace the eccentric bolts that Porsche state as the 944 ones have exactly the same eccentric.

I think you will be able to get some very good quality s/h 17" or 18" wheels with good tyres from the usual Porsche places like Jasmine, Design911, Type911 etc and all for around £1000. These wheels will have value among the Porsche community if you ever need to change them, those other ones will not.

Lastly, Ebay can be a good source for S/H wheels and tyres, if you are patient and double, no triple check they are what the seller describes them as. I bought some 17" Boxster S wheels with brand new tyres for £350
