Teaching a youngster to drive - location

Any idea where I can take a 12 year old and his mini to teach him to drive ?

Just the basic clutch control and driving round in circles before I spend some money hiring the track at Tadley for an afternoon.

Was wanting to find somewhere that doesn't mean I get a tug from the cops, so I guess that rules out railway station car parks and the like.

The car isn't road legal.

Any suggestions ? I'm in West Berkshire (near Theale) but don't mind travelling.

My three started there at the age of 12

All three passed the test first time, one on his 17th birthday, one three days after his birthday, the daughter had to weight a couple of weeks as they had drought in the two part test by then

None have had any accidents since

that under 17's seems a bit overkill for what I am looking for.

Brooklands MB world offer young driver training in A classes. Might be worth a look for an initial session etc Having learnt to drive on tractors from a young age, this is something I also plan to do with my own kids. Cheers Jon

thanks John, but was thinking of a "free" place to let him drive his mini around. Car park, trading estate, etc, but somewhere "legal".

There is a place in essex but its probably miles away from yourself.

Might have a drive 'round some of the local farms at the weekend to see if I can blag use of a track or something.

blackbushe is a good location, i use it for photo's, loads of space and noone bothers you

I think car parks or industrial estates etc will be your best bet. Go early to make the chances of traffic even less. When I was 15 or so my Dad used to let me drive down tracks and country lanes etc.

I used to practice in the Wickes car park in Invincible Rd, Farnborough. Haven't been there in years so I don't know if they've put any of those pesky bollards or poles in. Good luck.

£12 and you can just drive around for as long as you like, there are traffic lights, roundabouts and hills to practice on, although beware of other very inexperienced drivers and give them a wide berth....

Here is a quiet road, which is sometimes used by learners during the day, but outside of working hours is empty.

Good for introducing the clutch and hill starts.

Can't stress enough that it you can get in serious trouble for this if you are caught though...
