I plan on removing the fuel tank from my 2004 ro either today or tomorrow and i just wanted to know if there were any tricks to removing it before hand.

I can see the bolts for the brace, which i would undo. Once of the brace sections runs under the rear diff mount. Would i need to lower the diff to remove the brace?

I plan to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump.

Also is there any precautions for the fuel filler neck? I assume it come out with the tank.

I have drained the fuel out of the tank, and i am removing the tank so i can thoroughly rust proof the under side of the ro.

I did try to search my variuos manuals with no success, i later remembered that the gto's don't have tanks mounted underneath the car but in the boot for safety reasons. silly

thankyou

I bit cheeky I know but.
Would it be possible for you to post some pictures up of the general removal and also of the fuel and electrical outlets on the top of the tank.
I am trying to establish if the 8.1L fuel bucket mod for a GTO is possible on a 2004 Monaro.

try the US and Oz forums for a howto on removing it, I came across one a while back, should have taken a note of where, but it had pretty detailed photos on how it all comes apart. Think it was on a thread to do with modifying the fuel tank/pump and it was definitely the 04 model car. Don't recall it being a particularly difficult looking process, so much so its on my to do list at some point when I get around to doing a bit of undersealing on the car.

ok without sounding stupid, how do you disconnect the quick release fittings from the fuel filter?

This is what i have

These are the pliers i have

The pliers just don't seem to fit, i don't know if im being stupid or if there is another trick to removing them?

Once the filter is out, its just a matter of disconnecting the fuel pump electrics and supporting the tank and dropping it out by undoing 6 nuts/bolts

You don't need tools. Just push them further onto the connector squeeze the tabs then pull off, sometimes a bit stiff.

dont think you need any pliers just push the pipe towards the filter and squeeze the taps with your fingers, I've not done this on a Ro before but they look the same as others i've come across. be careful though as the fuel can still be under pressure and give you a quick spray so mind your eye's

wink

Also hopefully G has relived the pressure in the system with the Schrader valve on the fuel rails.
There will still be fuel in the pipes to be careful of. (I found this out when fumbling around and pulled the fuel line instead of the vac hose...I smelt of petrol for a while)

i havent relived the pressure on the schrader valve. One of guides i have just says pull the pump relay and start the car. I didnt like that idea.

Oh yeah im used to smelling of fuel, but its usually aviation fuel and not shell v-power. I have syphoned as much fuel as i can out of the tank.

Im glad theres helpful people on this forum smile

I have done the relay way, like in the Holden service manual, a few times changing over Inlet manifolds.
You still get covered when you are near the fuel filter anyway. I think when I have seen pump change overs they normally ask for the tank to be quarter full only or less.
Aviation fuel....mmm....

Does the fuel flow from the left where the two fuel lines are too the single right fuel line or is it the other way around.

If it is any help I changed all 3 straps on mine as they were rusted and they all just come off without any problems and the centre one undoes at the back of the car and then just swings forward and unclips from the diff bracket
