What does the red bar mean on the rev counter display they show during in car shots?
I've looked on google but can't find an answer.

Pretty sure it's the max revs.

It shows a trace of the recent top rpm hit.

Useful to show when they are short shifting.

It is called a 'tell tale'.

Why in some corners does it show max rpm when they're teetering through at sod all then?

Or is it a case of max rpm in the last 5 seconds?

Historically a mechanic would be able to see on the tell-tale how high the revs had been during that session. But yeah the graphics tend to just show the max for the last few seconds.
