Afternoon gents,

I've just bought a 1993 XJ40 Sovereign, which has the original cassette head unit and a CD changer (that doesn't work) in the boot.

As I'm not that fussed about the CD changer, does anybody know if Jaguar fitted a CD head unit to the XJ40 from the factory? I don't particularly want to put a tacky aftermarket one in there.

Thanks in advance,
Adam.

You can always rely on Jaguar to be about 10 years behind the curve in audio. CDs were launched in 1984 - and my 2001 S-Type had a bloody cassette player in it!!

It didn't come with a manual for the head unit, by any chance? I guess it's the same Alpine/Jaguar head unit as my 1995 XJS and I've never managed to find a manual yet.

I don't know if it's the same type of head unit as yours and I'm having a bit of trouble with my camera at the moment so I can't get a photo up for you to compare, but the only paperwork I have relating to the stereo is the standard XJ6 handbook.

I'll try to get a photo to you at some point and if it is the right one I can scan the HU related pages in and send them to you if that's what you need?

I had a similar dilema with mine, the changer worked perfectly but i prefer a dash mounted cd player and am ugrading the audio anyway so needed a better one.

When I removed the changer I found that it had two 'big leads' in place for connecting the head-unit to the changer, one of which had corroded badly and hence a new one had been fitted instead.
It might be worth checking if it's just the lead that's at fault on yours?
Or I would be willing to sell the head-unit, lead and changer that I have?

Or if it's a dash mounted player you're after, and afermarket is the only way, then try to find a head-unit that suits the dash without looking tacky, lights up green etc.

I bought an Alpine 9880R for mine, lights up green, good specs and good price but maybe OTT if you dont need pre-outs, usb, etc:

Thanks for that - I have a pdf of the manual for the CD changer - Alpine with Jaguar badge, it's the one with the sliding disk door. I'll pass it on if you'd like it.
