Hi all,

I was wondering what you all think would be a good design to go for.

In September I will be in my final year studying Architectural Technology. I've worked for an architects practice for the last few years to present so I'm having a meeting tomorrow at work for them to give me some ideas, but would like to see what all you guys think.

I'm finding it hard mainly because there is no set brief. We pick what we want to do and then a suitable site.

We were told that the building should be of regional to national importance. There are a few people thinking of football academies etc. but I would rather do something else.

What do you all think?

An asylum for the mentally Ill.

Seriously. We have now lost our asylum system (or whatever cottonwool wrapped name they were given in the final days).

Nowadays we have 'care in the community' - or free range loonies, as it should be called.

I think the scope here for a 'concept' modern day asylum / mental health institute could be huge.. Even more so if you proposed a self sufficient asylum like the ones of old.

+ with rose tinted glasses our old asylums were simply awsome structures.

Just a thought. All the best with it.

Race circuit with a beautiful pit garage/VIP complex! Find a bit of land with a great rolling altitude profile and let your imagination run wild.

Car dealership? Something different to the usual steel and glass palace.

Take a new brand to the UK, say Infiniti and reflect their core values and design philosophy in the building.

good one! And then stick it infront of Bernie ecklescake to take over to Texas! Show him where he is going wrong with all these modern Herman Tilke tracks.

Relfecting the car dealership idea, how about a dealership (or something) to do with boats?

Got to be scope for some nice features there? A giant sail like structure?

I don't know if you have had much drive towards sustainable structures in your course, so maybe something that showcases sustainable innovations of the past few years.

I start my final year in September as well and in my second semester have to complete an investigative project relating to the overall structural design of my chosen research item.

The structure wouldn't have to be 100% sustainable, so a race track could work, I would just have to concentrate on the buildings around etc. and how they run, so maybe types of ventilation and water heating etc. depending if a building is on the site that I choose, the concrete from the existing structure can sometimes be used as an aggregate in the concrete for the new building.

I think that the design would need to be 'wacky' so steel might be the best thing to use.

I do like the design of this (in terms of it being different) so not matter what I choose I would like it to look completely different to what is out there at the moment (if possible)
