Porsche Boxster 3.2 S for £10k, talk to me
Discussion
Hello all.
I was looking at a Boxster S 3.2 but could not get insured on one myself - so ended up with an EP3 Type R. My cousin came to me today asking me for some advice on what to get, I suggested a few names but the one that he liked the sound of most was the 3.2 S Boxster.
Would it be a dog for £10k? What are the faults? The positive points? Negative points?
Cheers!

I've had 3. They're great value for money and on the whole very reliable (if you look at actual statistics vs RMS/IMS mythology). However its still a porsche an its expensive to fix if it goes Pete Tong, so history is important. Look for heavy clutch and corroded brakes. Make sure the hood mechanism and rear spoiler work fine.
For £10K you'll probably be looking at pre-facelift model - nothing wrong with that, but look for tears in the plastic screen.

I've got an 'S' model. Great cars for the money. As somebody has already said though check the clutch for heaviness and the general condition of the brakes. Insurance is group 19A.
Probably stating the obvious here, but if at all possible, get it checked over by a specialist, it will be more than worth it in the long-run.
ETA: Forgot to add, you could consider the 2.7. *Some* say there isn't really much difference in performance from the 3.2. I can't back that up as I've never driven one, but it could be something to think about.

Is the 3.2 the only one to get?
Dad keeps saying that he wants one when he retires in a few years. I say that the 3.2 S is the best one aond not to bother with the 2.5 basic one.
2.5 became 2.7 ~2002, which is ~220bhp and if you're not fussed about mega-power then it'll be quick enough.Dad keeps saying that he wants one when he retires in a few years. I say that the 3.2 S is the best one aond not to bother with the 2.5 basic one.

For the money, I think they are utterly fantastic. Such a good chassis and never as slow as people like your average hot hatch driver think they are.
I have been offered less than 10 grand for mine on trade in (2001 986S) and I think you could not go wrong with it. With regards to the clutch mine has been heavy since I got it 4 years and 40000 miles ago, not sure that heaviness necessarily indicates a problem! Maintenance is more expensive than other cars of its price but I know bog standard Audi A3 drivers who pay higher servicing costs from the main dealers. As regards the difference between the 2.7. and 3.2 I was fortunate to run mine against my brothers old 2.7, In isolation it was plenty quick enough but was missing the final punch of the S, a point shown vividly on the uphill sections of the Millbrook test track. However in the real world the 2.7 is a fine car. Tell your cousin to go for it, great cars!

Fair comment. I ran mine for a year and approximately 6000 miles with a stiff/heavy clutch. I had it replaced recently as I felt it took something away from the driving experience.Edited by speedster986 on Monday 31st May 19:51
On taking the old one out, the specialist said that there wasn't much life left in it. Apparently they are good for roughly 50/60k miles, which tallies with my car as it is currently on 57k.
Had my S now for 3yrs and its had a bit of a heavy clutch all that time so i would not worry too much there , study the history, service every 12months a must , mine had Porsche dealer history if not check its from a good indie , great car , holds the road like glue ,but be careful in the wet. go for the S though , but im a it biased
Recently bought an 's'. Fantastic thing. FPSH, 70k miles, one owner and with over £10k worth of extras. It's an 02 and was almost £49k new - I paid slightly less £10k for it. Lovely, lovely car.
Just had all four wheels refurbished and an annual service done at RGA in Vauxhall for about £780 all in, which I actually thought wasn't too bad.
Road tax for the year was £245 too, which was a nice surprise.
Driven a Cayman S a fair amount, and oddly I prefer the size of the 986 interior, its a bit more snug, and also prefer the dials and dash. Just seems to have more character and more retro charm.
Love it.

It needn't be a dog, but for £10k I'd have thought you're looking at earlier one, or someone selling because they're faced with some large bills such as discs/pads/tyres, yes they're consumables but I get the impression a lot of people buy Boxster for "cheap" fun then realise that if/when things need doing they're not that cheap to maintain given what you can buy one for.
Hugely capable car, £10k does leave other options that may be cheaper to run though IMO.

Agree, but if you buy right (see the one I posted) where all the work has just been done...Hugely capable car, £10k does leave other options that may be cheaper to run though IMO.
