Sunday Post's "e-mail" jury gives:

"Thumbs Down to Speed Cameras!"

(Reported by Tom McKay and Kathryn Mainds)

www.sundaypost.com/news5.htm

"The Association of Chief Police Officers says hundreds more speed cameras will be place on Britain's roads in the next year.

'We are told millions raised in fines will be used to maintain and extend the camera network.

'But do the general publich believe that more cameras are required, or even think that the ones we have already are in the right place?

'Or do they think the cameras are just an excuse to make money?

'To get the right picture - we aksed the Sunday Post e-mail jury for their views!

'A majority of 63% were against the placing of more cameras and 74% though they were a money making game!

'"Bill Purvis blasts: "We don't need more speed cameras. The existing ones should be re-sited where they will reduce accidents and not placed, as is often the case, on the only straight bit of road where it is possible to overtake!"

'"And they are only installed to make money - most of them are not installed anywhere near an accident blackspot. Would it not be better for funding to be used to help clear up serious crime rather than to persecute the motorist for driving a few miles over the speed limit? Perhaps then the police would gain more support - but then they will not earn as much revenue!"

' Eric Moore agrees: "Way of making money under pretext of safety! If they were really interested in safety, they would turn their attention to drivers who are driving dangerously, or those idiots who clog up the motorways by not keeping left!

'"Speed cameras can't detect someone driving dangerously, so it is grossly unfair and illogical to prosecute someone for simply breaking the speed limit - especially when they were the only vehicle for miles under perfect driving conditions!"

'Rena Blight drives in opposite direction and claims that the police have researched the best places to situate the cameras according to numbers of accidents. She adds that if they prevent one accident - then they are worth it! If they stop arrogant, ignorant and selfish drivers who think they have the right to drive as fast they they want - when they want - they are worth it!!!

'Tom Murray agrees "They are in good positions and more should be installed! The Highway Code has speed limits and when you pass your test - you agree to keep to them!" (Er!)

'"AFTER ALL SPEED KILLS!"

'But Tom would like to see some changes in speed restrictions "I want the speed limit on motorways and some dual carriageways increased. Roads near schools should be reduced to 20mph and emphasis placed on drivers who constantly speed in towns and built-up areas"

' Gordon Clark says he has no strong views, but thinks they are a good thing if they slow traffic down, but worries that people slow down for camera and then speed up on their merry way again!"

Fair poll? Fair views? Fair reporting? Representative spread?

Note overall result anti-scam!
