Santa Pod this weekend

Paul, sadly, that car came all the way from Switzerland, with a whole host of upgrades fitted, inc new paint and proceeded to take out the xmas tree lights on the very first run out.
Driver was ok, front end of car was very bent.
Not my pic,but
Better view
Pixelpimp, you pose an interesting question. Ive not tried anyhting as fast as you suggest as the background loses its fast blurring which to my mind adds the impression of speed.
Yes, these Drag race stuff is silly quick, but that to me is part of the challenge of getting a good capture. I may however, experiment further, but time was short and I wanted to get some useable results.

I agree with the other poster, you should increase your shutter speed as they are not very sharp. Or you need to move closer and use less zoom.
Admittedly I haven't looked at all of these, but the ones I have look nice and sharp to me - what's wrong with this one for example?http://www.flickr.com/photos/30938108@N02/46566817...
Panning with longer shutter speeds is far more dramatic and interesting than boring fast freeze frame pictures.

Just by way of illustration, you can imagine what speed the Superbikes were accelerating over the mountain. . .
This was shot at 400th/sec with a Nikon D200 at 100iso using an 80-200 f2.8 lense.

Must get back to Santa Pod, I'm only 30mins away!
I barely jump that high in motocross, I can't imagine that guys skill! This was shot at 400th/sec with a Nikon D200 at 100iso using an 80-200 f2.8 lense.

I haven't looked at any of the ones on Flickr, I assumed the best of the bunch was posted in this thread so for that reason I didn't bother. http://www.flickr.com/photos/30938108@N02/46566817...
ETA - Ahh you mean apart from the huge head filling the foreground?

Panning is indeed far more interesting, when you have significantly developed your panning technique. This is handheld 1/15th at 200mm

Panning is not the be-all and end-all of photography though, I would prefer to see sharper shots rather than blurred ones. If that necessitates increasing the shutter speed to 1/160th or 1/250th in order to get sharp shots then so be it.

With respect, you've criticised the OP for lack of sharpness then posted an example of your work which is far less sharp than the photos you didn't like...

It's also a bit of a leap from me saying panning is more interesting to you deciding I thought it was the be-all and end-all!

That was to illustrate what is possible with ultra slow shutter speed and good technique. At that sort of shutter speed, you will never get the entire thing in focus, in fact only the rear wing is.Just setting 1/125th isn't some kind of panacea to creating a fantastic photo, there are a lot of other variables one must take into account as well.
INAR, you seem to like putting words into peoples mouths. I have never said 1/125 was a panacea, and the reason I *chose* that speed is because in the past it has worked to give *me* the desired background.
Having only been to this meeting armed with the kit Ive wanted for a while, I fully agree that further experimentation with shutter speed is required.
Whilst I think Pixelpimps mountain shot is a stunner, there is not enough motion blur in the background to my mind, but thats MY amateur opinion.
I should have maybe said in the OP, that all the pics are straight out of the camera, as thats how I prefer to work.
It may also be worth adding, that Im a keen hobbyist and nothing more, and whilst Ive been snapping for many years, its only over the last 18 months or so that I have started to fully appreciate and learn the ART of photography.

Anyway, since the head obviously bothers you :
