What temperature would we need, and how long would we need it for, to heat the water at a Scottish beach up to Mediterranean levels?

Haha I know, I used to go too! I'm just trying to plan for the best beach day(s) with air and water temperature.

The warmest the water gets is 14°C (64°F) July to September. Remember your drysuit! wink

Is that a top temperature or an average?

Tentsmuir beach (nothern end), Fife

Imagine this on a sunny day (the photo was taken in March) - is this mediterranean enough for you?
Just watch out for the seals further along the beach! Can't comment on the sea temperature thogh, I haven't been brave enough yet. Beautiful beach though.

Lunan bay is lovely, I was down there recently.

Also the beach at Loch Morlich near Avimore is great!

Definitely! I know there are many beautiful beaches to look at, and even stunning ones further north. I'm mostly wondering about sea temperature though; after say 7 days of 25 degrees +, do Scottish seas heat up enough to make the water comfortable?

Best thing to do would be to contact the authorities in Reykjavik, Iceland where they already do this. At Nauthólsvik Thermal Beach they pump hot water into the sea to heat it up. Been there a few times and it's very popular.

Think more like months at 30+ degrees to get anywhere near med temperatures. In one week you're probably talking a fraction of a degree. As to the question I imagine the answer is no unless you have brass balls.

At Nauthólsvik they get a constant temp of 20 degrees with hotspots of up to 35 degrees. It's been running since 2000.

If the gulf of Mexico is blazing hot would that not help to warm up the beaches up the west coast? If Scotland was also in the middle of a warm spell it could possibly get to a decent bathing temperature but it would struggle to get to Med levels. Find a deep empty rock pool and think of it as your own private non fizzy jacuzzi.

You'd have to be mad to go swimming there.

Scotland doesn't have mediterranean beaches because it's not on the mediterranean. It's a long way north of there, and much, much colder!

Good luck.
