camshaft choice and cost
Discussion
My Griff 500 has done over 75000 miles and although not showing any obvious signs of cam wear, I am well aware that a cam change is pobably over due. There doesn't seem to be any power loss but it does ocasionally clatter on start up but soon quietens down to an exceptionally smooth runner.
What are the likely signs of a worn cam?
Is it unusual for an engine to cover this mileage without need for cam replacement?
What is the current recomended camshaft that gives a good balance of smooth running and strong performance with a wide spread of torque?.
What is the approximate cost of Camshaft and followers?
What is the approximate cost of the labour involved for replacement?
Advice much appriciated.

Recently fitted a TVR Power 885 in mine and does exactly what they said it would. No shunting and will happily trundle along at 1200 revs yet will rev right through and very smooth spread of power and torque.
Supposed to be their latest development of the original 435 cam fitted to the 500s when new.

Hi Craig, not seen you on here for a while, you and the missus ok?dnb`s original cam lasted over 100,000miles, its not unheard of for cams to last a long time, your easiest way to decide would be to put in on a dyno and compare to a previous dyno run in the past, and against standard figures, and see what its putting out.
cam choice is like saying what colour car you like on here
I would say a piper 285, good torque and mildish manners, I know Rob at v8d prefers others, then again, Jamie at castle race loves `em, horses for courses I suppose.I`d have a good chat with rob at v8d and also Paul at v8tuner.
are you looking to fit it yourself? If so you could get a new cam and a set of followers for around £240, plus a few quid for valley gasket and seals and an oil and filter change.time wise you should be able to do it in a couple of days, you`ll need a tool for finding tdc, and a dial guage, and timing guage to go onto the front of the crank.
not sure on how much all this would cost if you gave it to a specialist, you`ll have to phone them up to find out.
cheers
clive
Thanks all for the advice. Clive - me and the misses are fine thanks. Hope you are both fine too. I will take the Griff to the Growl this year and get them to re-test it on the Dyno and compare the results with those taken a couple of years ago. Hopefully, we will catch up with you both then.
