I have just been told that the syncro is worn between 4th and 3rd. I thought that meant that the gearbox would simply have to be re-built but apparently that would be too expensive.

Any thoughts or advice?

Looks like I have to find a new gearbox. I have done a fair bit of research on here and on E36coupe and, when it gets to the point that a new box is required, threads just seem to end. The rest of the car is in great shape so this seems like bit of a shame.

Speak to FAB direct : http://www.fabdirect.com/

I've delt with these guys in the past and should be able to help you out.

as above it might be worth asking on E36 coupe.

From what I understand a number of people say that the 6 speed evo box can't be rebuilt but in reality like the vanos I'm sure there's people out there who can and do rebuild them.

I'd also recommend FAB direct for a replacement.

This was on Wheeler Dealers last week and their Evo Cab had the exact same problem. They couldn't rebuild their box box either and had to buy a box from a breakers yard which was a grand but got it for 500.

Probably not what you wanted to hear but Hope it helps.

Can't see why the box can't be rebuilt. they get assembled from pieces in the first place. Actually, give Higham's Park Motor Co a call, they specialise in BMW's and I seem to recall their saying the box could be rebuilt...

It's not that it can't be rebuilt.

The problem is that BMW will not supply individual parts, only complete gearboxes.

I also think that the gearbox manufacturer(Getrag), is bound by some kind of licencing agreement that prevents them from selling any parts.

Thanks all, very much indeed. It doesn't look like a complete catastrophe after all.

Sorry for the delay but I have not been able to use a computer for a few weeks.

I haven't done anything about it at all. The advice above looked pretty good so I am just going to wait and see. Bexley Motor Works said it would be something like £600 to find and fit a recon box, obviously with a bit of notice for them to find one.

The box is quite notchy in all gears and I can't honestly say that I have noticed a problem. I am trying to blip downshifts which help but other than that will just soldier on for now.

Please let me know how you get on.

Fit a 5 speeder from the 3 litre E36. Stronger and can get bits to rebuild it.
