Do I need car hire in Alicante?

Actually staying just north of Alicante in El Campello. A taxi from the airport to where we're staying is 30 quid each way. Car hire is about £120.
But do I really need it? Mrs is likley to just sunbathe all day but I want to go exploring. Is there anything to see that warrants hiring a car? (I bloody hope so!)

Stayed in Alicante old town a couple of times. If you don't mind a stroll I'd say you can manage without a car.
The harbour has a couple of nice bars, but the best places we found were the local backstreet bars and tapas places. Cheap as chips good food. Use the ones the locals use not the tourist traps down on the main promenade. There are plentynof little plazas too with nice bars.
There is a castle thing above the town but we never made it further than the bars...

How long are you staying for? I know the Altea/Javea area down the coast very well and it's great for exploring, plus there are some really amazing driving roads in the mountains.
A week. Long enough for me to get bored in. Will only have a Ford Ka (or similar) but if you know somewhere worthwhile, I may hire a bike and go out for a look. Failing that, I'll just rag the Ka.

I was down in Alicante 2 years back
Me an the misses(ex!) landed in Valencia , spent a couple of days there, then drove down the coast until Alicante, staying over various places on the way.
I would defo hire a car, have you been to Alicante before? Its a nice enough place, but not a great deal to do I found and after 2 days I was happy to move on, it reminded me a bit of Bristol in a way.
There are lots of nice little villages nearby with some lovely local churches and markets within short drives
The roads are ace,really smooth , then you have the mountains/hills to the North, I had a brand new Fiesta Diesel (1.3cdti)and the roads were ace fun even in that!
The drive from Valencia to Alicante avoiding the motorways was one of my favourite drives ever, not mind blowing but really good, beautiful scenery and even little sheds with w
es in them in the middle of knowhere, imagine that on the A303! Valencia is well worth a visit , its about 1.5-3 hour drive, the new tourist centre is great.

Ok a brilliant drive out is, take the N340 from San Joan d'Alacant to Xixona, keep going, then take the A7 motorway for 10 minutes towards Alcoy, then the A70 all the way down to Benidorm, or if you're feeling really adventurous come back via Finestrat, Relieu, Aigues, then stop and visit the caves at Busot.
This will take you at least half a day but there are some fantastic roads and sights.
Another route not to be missed is the N325 from Crevillent to Elche, then hang a left for El Fondo de les Neus, Hondon de las Fralies then hang another left and go over the mountains back down to Albatera this is somewhat shorter and can be done in an hour and a half or so.
I can post more of roads further north towards Valencia/Murcia if you want more, I spent at least 2 days a week riding these roads on my bikes for 5 years, and to be honest, its the main thing I miss about Spain

CV-755 looks like it might be ok?Really though you can't go wrong with any of the CV roads in the mountains.
